James T. Hebron

James T. Hebron, 89, passed away peacefully Jan. 2, 2009 after a long illness. He had a long impressive history. James grew up in Garden City and attended LaSalle Military Academy. He later attended Hofstra College and NYU Law School, until his dreams of law were interrupted by WWII. He was drafted into the Army and was sent to Princeton University where he studied advanced engineering as an Army specialist. He had to leave that for the Battle of the Bulge. He was assigned to the 69th Infantry Division and was shipped overseas. His actions there awarded him the Bronze Star with cluster, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Medal.

When he returned to the states he attended Columbia University where he received his BA and MA in industrial engineering. He then worked for Grumman for 43 years as the support material manager and then assistant director of systems engineering. In 1993 he received the Citizen of the Year award from the Nassau County Chapter of the NYS Society of Professional Engineers.

James also became district chairman of Boy Scouts for most of Nassau and Suffolk County while they were consolidating. He received the award of merit and the Silver Beaver award. Jim was the warden of Trinity Church in Roslyn for many years and was the recipient of the Bishops Cross. He later became warden emeritus of the church, a position that he was very proud of. He delivered Meals on Wheels for St. Francis Hospital for 12 years as well as ringing the Salvation Army bells with his beloved dog in reindeer ears for the less fortunate.

Over 50 years ago, Jim joined the Garden City Kiwanis Club as a charter member. Upon moving to Roslyn he became a charter member of the North Shore Kiwanis Club. He served on many committees as well as having been club secretary and president. He next served as Lt. Governor of the LI North Division, and then had the distinction of becoming the first Kiwanian to run "from the floor" for NY District Governor, and winning. That was in 1980-1981. In 1984 he gained a seat on the NY District Foundation Board for a two-year term. He continued to serve on the Board of Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center of which he was a charter member. For his exemplary work in Kiwanis Jim was given life membership in North Shore Kiwanis as well as Kiwanis International. He received many awards including the prestigious Hixon Award and Tablet of Honor.

James married Betty "Binky" Orgelman 66 years ago. Binky and Jim were very devoted to each other and enjoyed traveling, skiing, attending their church and enjoying their children, Lynn Grimaldi, Leslie Weible and Todd Hebron. They have four grandchildren, James Grimaldi, Andrew and Kaitlin Weible and Lauren Hebron, who all always brought Jim great pleasure.

Lawrence McNamara, of Garden City and Stewart Manor, died on Jan. 6, 2009. He was a WWII veteran and retired FDIC supervisor, VFW551 commander 1963-65. Husband of Myra. Father, grandfather and great-grandfather. The family was cared for by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, Floral Park. Funeral Mass at St. Anne's RC Church. Entombment Holy Rood Cemetery. Logo
