The field house is open for adult residents, ages 18 and older for basketball "pick up" basketball games on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 10 p.m. This free program will run until Aug. 20. Proof of residence is required to enter the gym.
Our summer chess club will be held at the Garden City Library's small meeting room on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. This program is open to any Garden City resident in 3rd through 7th grades. Paul Dooher will again moderate this free program.
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, the Garden City Recreation Department is sponsoring a trip to Splish Splash Water Park located in Riverhead for all students grades 6 to10, who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Buses will depart from the parking lot at St. Paul's School at 9 a.m. and will return there at approximately 5 p.m. Supervision for this trip will be provided by the Recreation Staff, The children will enjoy several hours of river rapids, slides and tube rides at this fantastic water park. The cost of this trip will be $28 per person, which will include unlimited rides at Splish Splash and transportation. Payment must be made in cash only. The Garden City Recreation Department will conduct trips to Adventureland Amusement Park in Farmingdale from our neighborhood parks. On Friday, Aug. 1, Hemlock and Grove Parks will take this trip. Nassau Haven, Edgemere and Tullmore Parks will visit Adventureland on Friday, Aug. 8. This trip is open to children who reside in the Inc. Village of Garden City.
The trip will leave from the parks at 11 a.m. and will arrive at Adventureland around noon. The children will enjoy three hours of unlimited rides and will depart Adventureland at 3 pm. The bus will return to the parks around 4 p.m.
Transportation will be provided by the recreation bus and supervision will be provided by the Recreation Dept.'s Park staff. The cost of this trip is $18 per child, which includes transportation, unlimited rides and supervision during the trip.
Registrations are now being accepted at the parks listed above. Please pick up a registration form at the park. Space is limited and payment must accompany the registration. Beginning Tuesday, July 14, the Field House will be open to Village of Garden City for high school and college aged students (aged 15-21) to come and learn the game of team handball. Jesse Sorensen, past member of the National Junior Team, will monitor this group and teach the rules of the game. This free program will run Tuesdays through July and August from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The Garden City Recreation Department is running a Team Handball Camp in St. Paul's Field House for Garden City residents ages 9-14 years old. Experienced player Jesse Sorensen will run the camp the week of Aug. 11 according to the following hours:
9-10 year olds: 9-11 a.m.
11-14 year olds: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The Recreation Department will run a theatre camp the weeks of July 28 and Aug. 4 in St. Paul's Cluett Hall. The camp is open to any child ages 7-12 who is a village resident. The camp will run Monday-Friday during the following hours:
Ages 7-9: 12-1 p.m.
Ages 10-12: 1-2 p.m.

Connie McKnight, resident yoga instructor, will continue to run her classes during the summer. Classes will run for seven weeks at a cost of $35. The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce its schedule for the Summer Gazebo Concert Series. All concerts start at 7:15 p.m. and are held at the gazebo at the corner of Stewart and Hilton avenues. In the event of rain, the concert would still be held but moved inside to St. Paul's Cluett Hall. Please bring a lawn chair or set up a blanket. The remaining schedule is as follows:

Due to the overwhelming response to the junior tennis camp (ages 8-11), the recreation department is opening another session. It will hold weekly camp every week of the summer until the week of Aug. 18. The camp will be held Monday through Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Community Park tennis facility and will cost $75 per week. To register, visit the new offices at 108 Rockaway Avenue.
The recreation department's summer programs in the parks began Monday, June 30. The five neighborhood playgrounds are open and the staff is running organized games and activities for children in grades 1-8. Each day starts at 10 a.m. with arts and crafts and runs throughout the day. Daily and weekly schedules will be posted in the parks. Don't miss out on this free program.

The recreation department's preschool camp is a fun way for children ages 3-and-a-half to 5-year-olds who live in Garden City to spend the summer. Children who attend this camp must be 3-and-a-half years by the start of their session and proof of age is required. Arts and crafts, music, nature and stories will fill the 1-and-a-half-hour class. This class will be held in St. Paul's Cluett Hall from 10:30 a.m. to noon and will be taught by Patricia Haas Leonenko, preschool teacher at St. Joseph's School. The cost of a one-week session is $75.
