Obituaries

William A. Von Glahn, of Greenport, died at Eastern LI Hospital on June 25, 2008. He was 87 years old. Mr. Von Glahn was born in Ridgewood, Queens, on July 5, 1920 to George J. and Lydia E. Von Glahn. He attended Pratt Institute, NYU School of Engineering and JYU Business School. For more than 39 years, he enjoyed a career with Bell Systems (Bell Labs, AT & T and NY Telephone) as an engineer.

On Oct. 18, 1942, he married the former Lorraine A. Smith in Ridgewood. For many years, they resided in Stewart Manor before relocating to East Shroudsburg, PA, and Greenport three years ago and becoming members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

From June of 1943 until December of 1945, he served in the Army Air Corps and participated in the European Theatre of Operations - England and France. He continued to serve in the Reserves until 1957 when he was honorably discharged as a captain.

While a resident of Stewart Manor, he served as mayor from 1969 until 1977. He was a volunteer with the Stewart Manor Fire Department, a member of the Free & Accepted Masons and St. James Lutheran Church. He was active with the Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts. Bill, himself, was an Eagle Scout when he was 16.

He was a retired member of the NYS Professional Engineers, a life member of Nassau County Village Officers Association and the Telephone Pioneers of America. In his spare time, he enjoyed "do-it-yourself" projects, house remodeling, woodworking, plumbing and electrical repairs.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Lorraine Von Glahn; three daughters, Carol Grace Dinda of New Suffolk, Denise Ruth Von Glahn of Tallahassee, FL, and Janet Ellen Craig of Setauket; one sister Ruth L. McCloy of Englewood, FL; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home, Southold. Services are being finalized and will be announced.

Eileen Mulligan died on July 6, 2008 at her home in Washington, DC, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Beloved wife of Robert. Loving mother of sons, Brian and Peter. Mother-in-law of Joanna Hayes Mulligan. Also survived by a host of relatives and friends. Predeceased in 1987 by Robert Jr.

The family received visitors on July 9 in the St. Ignatius Chapel of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Washington, DC. A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 10 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Arrangements were made by Joseph Gawler's Sons Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Washington Jesuit Academy 900 Varnem Street NE, Washington, DC 20007 or the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Hospital, 3800 Reservoir Rd. NW, Washington, DC 20007.
