Angela Heineman is running, uncontested, in this year's race for Garden City Board of Education trustee. She will represent the village's Central section for her three-year term, beginning in July.

Heineman and her husband, Geoffrey, have resided in Garden City since July 1988. They have two sons, Matthew, currently a senior at Garden City High School, and Robert, a freshman at Garden City High School. Both have attended Garden City Public Schools since kindergarten.

Although an attorney in good standing, admitted and licensed to practice in New York State since 1986, Heineman has been a homemaker and active community volunteer for the past 17 years. She currently serves as president of the Garden City PTA (August 2007-present) as well as a religious education board member (1997-present) and catechist (1995-present) at St. Joseph's Parish.

For the past six years, she regularly attended monthly meetings and work sessions of the Garden City Board of Education. As vice president of the Garden City PTA, Heineman said she attended almost every budget work session, reviewed the school district budget in great detail and questioned the Board of Education, superintendent and district and building administrators regarding the educational needs and priorities of Garden City's growing student population.

"Our community, including the Board of Education, has high expectations for our students and our educational programs, but we must also be judicious in our use of resources and always mindful of the burden placed upon the taxpayer. The district will face some serious challenges as it strives to improve both its programs and facilities in the upcoming years. I hope to use what I have learned to help the Board carry out its responsibilities, provide a high quality educational experience for all of our students, and prudently plan for the future," she said.

Residents can vote in the Garden City High School cafeteria between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 20. Heineman is replacing retiring president Ken Monaghan, who has served the board since July 1999 and was elected president in July 2001. After the May 20 election, the school board will elect another president.
