On Friday, April 25, Garden City resident Hugh McCay and his three brothers, Dan from California, Jim from Delaware and Ed from Kansas, competed in the Penn Relays Masters 60+ 4X100 Relay at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.

The Penn Relays Carnival is the oldest and largest track and field carnival in the United States, hosted by UPenn since April 21, 1895. The carnival regularly attracts more than 15,000 competitors from high schools, colleges and track clubs throughout North America as well as internationally, at both the amateur and Olympic levels of competition. Attendance typically tops 100,000 over the final three days.

The McCay brothers, Ed, 60, Hugh, 62, Jim, 68 and Dan, 74, before nearly 40,000 cheering spectators, were successful in what is believed to be the first time four senior-aged brothers competed in and completed the Masters 60+ 4X100 Relay in this or any other major track and field competition.

It should also be noted that a national competing team, Sprint Force America, comprised of four world class seniors aged 70+, set a world record in its age class in the same race with the McCay brothers, and while the brothers' time was well off the world standard, their 1:09.38 time was highly respectable for a team that could not draw on alternates or otherwise be selective in the make-up of their team.
