The Garden City Recreation Department will again sponsor Aquafina's Pitch, Hit and Run baseball skills competition at Grove Park Thursday, May 8, at 4 p.m.
The competition will be broken up into the following age groups: (Age is determined as of July 18) 7-8 years, 9-10 years, 11-12 years and 13-14 years.
There is no fee for this competition but pre-registration is necessary! Winners at the local level will advance to the sectional competition to be held at a different location. Registration forms can be filled out at the recreation department's new administrative offices at 108 Rockaway Avenue. Pre-registration must be done by noon May 8.
The spring session of yoga will begin the week of April 28. Connie McKnight, certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held at Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. Any resident of the village is invited to join these relaxing classes. The course schedule is as follows:
Mondays at 7:30 p.m. 8 classes for $40
Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. 9 classes for $45

Roster packages for the recreation department's Men's Over 35 Softball League are now available. This league plays on Sunday evenings. Rosters will be accepted from teams meeting the following eligibility requirements: Teams must be comprised of residents of the village and all players must be over 35 years of age or turning 35 during the course of the season.
The fee for this league is $500, which includes games, balls and umpires. Application packages can be picked up at the recreation department at village hall. The completed roster package will be accepted until May 6 or until 12 completed packages are received.
If you are a resident of the village, age 18 or over who would like to play softball in one of the recreation department's softball leagues, call the recreation office at 465-4075 to put your name on the "player list." The department sometimes has coaches who call looking for extra players to round out their rosters. Call and leave your name, age, address and phone number and the department will keep your name on file for the team who is looking for extra players.
The recreation department is pleased to offer a six-week tennis program for boys and girls ages 5-18 who reside in Garden City. This program will begin Monday, May 5, and continue through June 16. The cost of the program is $110 ($75 for PeeWees).
Visit the recreation department's administrative offices on the grounds of the St. Paul's athletic complex to fill out a registration form no later than April 21. Our pros will then match up your choices and ability level with the other children and contact you with your class assignment.
Skill Levels
PeeWee for all 5- and 6-year-olds.
Beginner-needs to learn the basic skills and serving - never played tennis.
Advance Beginner - player has taken lessons but needs to review basic skills. Is able to hit over the net with some consistency, beginning to serve.
Intermediate - player can direct the ball with some consistency and power. They can serve with consistency. Player is starting to work on tennis strategy.
Advanced - player is on school or recreation department's tennis team or plays in USTA tournaments.

All residents of Garden City are welcome to join the women's spring tennis tune-up. This program is geared to competitive and tennis team players. All sessions will be run at the Community Park tennis facility. The cost of each session is $75. We have divided this program into sessions as follows:
Session I - May 5 and May 7 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Session II - May 5 and May 7 from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Session III - May 6 and May 8 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Session IV - May 6 and May 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Groups are encouraged and all efforts will be made to accommodate team grouping and/or ability level by court and session whenever possible.

Spring/Summer Adult Tennis Lesson Registration to Begin
The recreation department will conduct evening tennis lessons for adults who live in Garden City at the Community Park tennis facility. The lessons will run for one hour each week in three sessions during the spring/summer months. The registrant has a choice of a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday class and a choice of time. There will be a maximum of four players per court. The dates and fees will be as follows:
Session I 6 weeks beginning May 12 $105
Session II 4 weeks beginning July 7 $75
Session III 4 weeks beginning August 4 $75

The recreation department's adult swim program has begun at Adelphi's indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult resident of Garden City age 18 or older. The program is open to residents for lap swimming on Mondays through Thursdays in one-hour time blocks at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the recreation office. You must register each day you would like to swim by calling the recreation office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time and space is limited.
The recreation department's adult programs in the field house run according to the following schedule:

These programs are open to residents of the Village of Garden City who have graduated from high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly pickup. A picture ID is required to sign in to any program. For further information, contact the recreation office at 465-4075.
Applications for the 2008-09 women's tennis leagues can be picked up at the Community Park Tennis Center. Openings are limited, but spots are available depending on skill level and days available to play. For more information call the Community Tennis Center at 483-2525. Applications must be picked up in person.
On Wednesday, April 23, the recreation department hosted a tournament for senior men (age 60 and over) beginning at 9 a.m.
On Monday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to noon the recreation department is hosting a women's round robin tournament. All residents of the village are invited to participate. Partners will be rotated in doubles play. The fee is $7 per person, as the court tie fee has been donated by Turnpike Cleaners. Prizes will be awarded.
