North Shore Fence of Westbury installs new "estate style" fencing at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary in April.

New "estate style" fencing has been installed at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary. President Rob Alvey was pleased to note that the attractive and sturdy tubular steel fence and gate has now been completed along the entire Tanners Pond Road section, and along most of the Colonial Avenue border. Funding was provided through grants from the New York State Department Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation with the support of New York State legislative representatives Senator Kemp Hannon and Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt.

Alvey noted that the 6-foot fencing was installed in several phases over the last few years, depending on availability of funding. According to Alvey, "More is certainly planned, but we are currently behind on our water bills to the village, and that will be our next priority. It was important to complete the Tanners Pond Road sections, as it is our main entrance and borders the most residential homes adjacent to our site. The neighbors have been very supportive of the improvements made during the last decade."

Two upcoming events highlight the success of the volunteer efforts to improve and manage the county "sump." On Saturday, April 19, from noon to 4 p.m. is a volunteer community service day to help an "Earth Day" spring cleanup at the site. The spring bulbs and cherry trees are starting to bloom, so there is much need for litter removal, raking and light pruning. Refreshments will be served for all volunteers, and GCBS coffee mugs will be available.

On Saturday, May 3, at 3 p.m. a service marking the dedication of new trees and shrubs will be held. Funding for trees and shrubs has been donated by many people during the last year in memory, honor or compliments of loved ones. An informal service is provided for friends, families and supporters, and it is an opportunity to enjoy a pleasant spring afternoon at the community nature preserve. Some photos are available at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary website: www.gcbirdsanctuary.org. Should you be interested in volunteering or participating in the Earth Day April 19 cleanup or May 3 tree dedication, contact Alvey at 326-1720.
