High winds March 5 tore two trees from its roots, letting one break through a Princeton Street home's roof and ridge pole. No injuries were reported but the incident caused extensive damage estimated at $50,000 according to a Garden City Fire Department report. An investigation found the two downed trees, wires down, one telephone pole snapped and water coming into the basement from a downstairs toilet. LIPA and the village's water department and tree crew were called to the scene. The home's power was shut off and a sump pump used in the basement. Photo courtesy of the Garden City Fire Department
