The recreation department will show the movie, Underdog, rated PG and running 82 minutes, in St. Paul's Cluett Hall, Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. Admission is free and snacks will be available for a nominal charge. For further information, call 465-4075.

The recreation office will run a gym program for children in grades K-high school in St. Paul's Field House from Tuesday, Feb. 19, to Friday, Feb. 22. The schedule is as follows:

Grades K-1 - 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Grades 2-3 - 10:30 a.m. to noon

Grades 4-6 - noon to 2 p.m.

Grades 7-12 - 2 to 6 p.m.

Recreation staff will run this program, which is open to children only. For more information, visit the recreation office in the cottages.

Due to popular demand, the recreation department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the village. The class will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Feb. 15. The classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The cost of the 10-week program will be $105 (supplies are bought on your own; a supply list will be handed out at the first class).

This 10-week program will teach the beginners as well as advanced students the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still lifes in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.

Urban is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in many Garden City homes. To register, visit the recreation office.

The recreation department is sponsoring a Rec Night for middle schoolers on the remaining dates in St. Paul's Field House:

Friday, Feb 29 - seventh and eighth graders

Recreation staff will chaperone these parties, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games.

Note that once the children are in the Field House they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come down to the Field House to pick up your child.

The recreation department is sponsoring a chess club for children in Grades 3-6. This free program runs Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m. in the Garden City Library's small meeting room. The program began Jan. 12 and runs through March. Players at all levels of experience are invited to attend. Call 465-4075.

The winter session of yoga began the week of Jan. 28. Connie McKnight, certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each 12-week course costs $60 and each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. Any resident of the Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The course schedule is as follows:

Mondays: all-level yoga at 7:30 p.m.

Thursdays: all-level yoga at 11:30 a.m.

Middle and High School Open Gym

The middle-high school open gym program will now continue on the following days and times:

Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6 p.m. basketball

Thursdays from 3:30 to 6 p.m. basketball and volleyball

The recreation department's adult swim program has begun at Adelphi's indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult resident of Garden City age 18 or older. The program is open to residents for lap swimming on Mondays through Thursdays in one-hour time blocks at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the recreation office. You must register each day you would like to swim by calling the recreation office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time and space is limited.

The recreation department's adult programs in the field house run according to the following schedule:

Mondays

Men's open basketball 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Men's over 40 basketball 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Tuesdays

Men's over 30 basketball 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Wednesdays

Men's open basketball 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Men's over 40 basketball 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Thursdays

Adult volleyball 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Adult soccer 8:30 to 10 p.m.

These programs are open to residents of the Village of Garden City who have graduated from high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly pickup. A picture ID is required to sign in to any program. For further information, contact the recreation office at 465-4075.

On Sunday afternoons the St. Paul's Field House is open for Family Fun for village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym will be available for use from noon to 3:30 p.m. each Sunday until March.

This time is designated for residents to use on a family or individual basis. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff to monitor activity, this is not a drop-off program. Recreation staff asks that elementary-age children be accompanied by an adult. For the safety of users, no lacrosse or baseball will be allowed.
