A Dec. 27 fire left a Wyatt Road home with quite a bit of damage after the blaze erupted in a second-floor room. According to Garden City Fire Captain Frank, the fire, which was billowing out a second-floor window upon the fire department's arrival, consumed the entire room and appears to be accidental in nature.
As of press time, however, the fire marshal had not yet determined the exact cause but firefighters were speculating it either erupted from smoking or an electrical problem.
Captain Frank noted that it started in the room's corner near a couch. An elderly woman home at the time of the fire, Captain Frank believes, attempted to put the fire out before calling the fire department and was transported to Winthrop with smoke inhalation. Upon the woman's hospital release, the Nassau County Red Cross will offer temporary shelter at a nearby hotel and, if needed, funds for food and clothing. The relief will be provided at no cost to the Garden City resident.
Carle Place, West Hempstead (engine) and Franklin Square (ladder) provided mutual aid to Garden City.
