The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children's swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University Swimming Pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be 6 years of age by the start of the program to participate. The classes will begin Saturday, Dec. 1. Red Cross certified instructors are teaching the classes. The cost is $40. To register, please mail the form and a check to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue, Garden City. Walk-in registrations will not be accepted until Nov. 28.

Level 1 - introduction to water skills

Level 2 - for children who have taken a lesson but need to learn fundamental skills

Level 3 - will build on fundamental skills by providing guided practices

Level 4 - develops confidence in the strokes learned and improves other aquatic skills

Level 5 - provides further coordination and refinement of strokes

Level 6P - Personal Water Safety - for children who have passed Red Cross level 6 or 7 - stresses survival floating, treading water, swimming in clothes and more

Level 6F - Water Fitness - for children who have passed Red Cross level 6 or 7 - sessions will cover learning training techniques, how to use fins, kickboards, pace, clock and more

To register: Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable. To register by mail - walk-in registrations are now being accepted too - pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall. Residents can make their own by listing child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session and classes for which he/she is registering. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Please make all checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City." The recreation office cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail.

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter, Rich Anderson and the recreation staff will conduct a gym program for children in grades 3-5. This program will consist of organized games and activities in a supervised setting. This program will run from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in St. Paul's Field House beginning Dec. 3 according to the following schedule:

Boys in Grades 3-5 Mondays from 3:30-6 p.m.

Girls in Grades 3-5 Fridays from 3:30-6 p.m.

This program is free and no registration is necessary. Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the Field House. Please note that once children are on the facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child and please be prompt. For further information, call the recreation office at 465-4075.

The recreation department will sponsor open gym time in the Field House for village students in grades 6-12. The Field House will be open and supervised from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for students to play the following activities: Tuesdays and Wednesdays basketball Thursdays basketball and volleyball It's time to send letters to Santa and the recreation department will speed up the process. A special Santa's mailbox will be set up in the village hall lobby beginning Dec. 3. Children can drop their letters in the mailbox and Santa will send them a personalized reply. Santa's mailbox will be available from Dec. 3-19. In addition sending their letters to Santa, kids can take a chance at guessing the number of candy pieces in the jar next to Santa's mailbox and the child whose guess is closest to the actual number will win the jar, candy and all! As with Santa's mailbox, the candy contest will be available from Dec. 3-19.

The recreation department is pleased to announce the start of registration for its Winter 2008 Indoor Tennis Program for children at the Community Park tennis center. In addition to lesson programs, the department will again offer Round Robin Match Play and workout programs. Supervised practice time is included for all lesson participants (except PeeWees) on a first-come, first-served basis and limited to six players per time period.

The recreation department's adult swim program has begun at Adelphi's indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult resident of Garden City age 18 or older. The program is open to residents for lap swimming on Mondays through Thursdays in one-hour time blocks at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the recreation office. You must register each day you would like to swim by calling the recreation office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time and space is limited.

The recreation department's aerobic classes are just the thing to get your heart pumping and your body moving. Experienced aerobic instructors teach the classes and try to tailor their program to the level of the participants. Classes are offered at Cluett Hall in St. Paul's according to the following schedule:

Monday at 8 a.m.

Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Thursday at 8 a.m.

Thursday at 7 p.m.

Sunday at 9 a.m.

Classes are approximately one hour and 15 minutes. There is no pre-registration for these classes. It costs $4 per class if you "pay as you go" or you can buy a 20-class pass for $60. This pass can be purchased in the recreation office at village hall or the Cluett Hall office. For more information, call Cluett Hall between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 742-4905.

The recreation department's adult programs in the field house began Oct. 9 according to the following schedule:

Mondays

Men's open basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Men's over 40 basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Tuesdays

Men's over 30 basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Wednesdays

Men's open basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Men's over 40 basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

Thursdays

Adult volleyball 7:30-10 p.m.

Adult soccer 8:30-10 p.m.

These programs are open to residents of the Village of Garden City who have graduated from high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly pickup. A picture ID is required to sign in to any program. For further information, contact the recreation office at 465-4075.
