The annual observance of Fire Prevention Week in Garden City was Oct. 7-13. All residents and friends were invited to attend the Annual Inspection and Open House Sunday, Oct. 14. The program was conducted at Fire Headquarters and in the employee parking field, located on the west side of Village Hall on Stewart Avenue.
The village's solicitation law prohibits all unwanted commercial solicitations and distributions on all private residential property in the village and prohibits non-commercial solicitations and distributions on private property to the extent desired by the resident. This law was designed to protect residents from unwanted invasions of their privacy.
Any resident requesting not to be solicited should complete a "Notice of Objection" form at the Village Hall. Presently, the board has authorized certain groups to solicit door-to-door in the village. As of this writing, the only group that has authorization to solicit is the New York Youth Club for the dates of Oct. 20-21 and Dec. 15-16.
As we get our homes ready for the onset of colder weather, I encourage residents, particularly those with young children, to consider replacing the glass in their storm door inserts with safety glass.
Last summer, our police department responded to a call for a medical emergency involving a young child who sustained a deep laceration from broken glass from a storm door insert that he accidentally ran into. While the New York State Building Code requires that glass in replacement storm doors be safety glass, most of our older homes do not have safety glass.
I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village's website for information regarding the village's operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. Also please be aware that I have a village email address and would be delighted to hear from village residents about their concerns. It is as follows: MayorPBee@gardencityny.net.
The next regularly scheduled Village Board of Trustees meeting is Thursday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m.
