It is wonderful to see so many Garden City residents as well as visitors to our village enjoying alfresco dining on New Hyde Park Road, Franklin Avenue and Seventh Street. The village piloted alfresco dining in the summer of 1996. The Garden City Chamber of Commerce supported outdoor dining as a strategy to encourage shopping in Garden City. They asked the village to change its code to allow outdoor dining by permit, which the village did on May 15, 1997. For the past 10 seasons the number of businesses providing this feature continues to grow. This year there are more than 25 businesses who have permits. There is no doubt that alfresco dining is an overwhelming success. I encourage residents to come early and combine shopping with dining outside at their favorite place. The outdoor dining will continue through November.
While the Incorporated Village of Garden City subscribes to an emergency weather service and carefully monitors regional storm activity, in preparation for implementing its storm emergency plan, there is a lot that residents can and should do to make preparations for the upcoming hurricane season. In this, my third column I will share additional information so that you can be prepared in the event that a major storm hits Long Island.
The following are just a few important ways we can all prepare for a hurricane: Listen to local officials. If local authorities tell you to evacuate or remain at home, it is vital to your safety that you follow their guidance. Know potential evacuation routes- and alternates - Keep a map in your car and in your kit at all times. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, local radio, watch TV or check the Internet often for official news and instructions as they become available. While local authorities may not immediately be able to provide information, they'll get it out to the public as soon as they can. Do not return to your home until local authorities say it is safe - even after the hurricane and after flood waters recede, roads may be weakened and could collapse. Buildings may be unstable and drinking water may be contaminated. Use common sense and exercise caution. Learn First Aid and CPR - knowing simple first aid techniques and CPR can give you the skills and confidence to help during an emergency.
I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village's website for information regarding the village's operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. Also please be aware that I have a village email address and would be delighted to hear from village residents about their concerns. It is as follows: MayorPBee@gardencityny.net.
