The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce the 2007-08 indoor tennis programs for children at Community Park's tennis center. The youth development programs will be offered in two sessions. In additional to the lesson programs, the recreation department will again offer round robin match play, team tennis and workout programs. Supervised practice time is included for all lesson participants (except PeeWees) on a first come, first serve basis and is limited to six players per court.

The types of classes offered are as follows:

Tots Ages 4-5

Pee Wee Ages 5-7 - introduction to tennis, emphasizing basic movement and striking skills in a fun game-playing environment.

Novice Ages 6-7 - continued development of basic movement and striking skills on a full size court. Serving and scorekeeping will be introduced. Past tennis experience required.

Junior Ages 8-11 - Extension of novice level program. Continued emphasis on striking concepts, movement and skills related to tennis play. No experience is necessary.

Junior Advanced Ages 8-11 - for the more serious, more advanced students. These lessons are offered in one-and-one-half hour time slots. Experience required. Match play during last half hour.

Senior Ages 12 and Older - Extension of junior program, continued emphasis on fundamentals and skills related to tennis play.

Senior Advanced Ages 12 and Older - For the more serious, more advanced student. These lessons are offered in one-and-one-half hour time slots. Experience required. Ladder participation during last half hour.

Ultimate Workout - For experienced junior tennis players who want to "hone" their skills and get a good workout.

Round Robin Intramural Match Play - For children ages 9 and up who are ready to take their tennis skills to the next level by playing intramural matches in a minimally supervised, fun environment. Child must be able to serve from the baseline, sustain a slow paced rally, keep score and have a general understanding of the rules of tennis. Screening for this program will be held Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. You must register for this screening. More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Team Tennis for Juniors - For players ages 9-18 who want to play competitive tennis in a team format. Interclub play, lessons and practice time are offered in this program. A tryout is mandatory for this program since there is a limited number of participants. Tryout dates are Sept. 22 and 23. More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Junior Paddle Tennis Program - For children in Grades 6 and up. Directed by Susan Tarzian, APTA platform tennis professional, and staff. This program will provide an introduction to the wonderful world of platform tennis and improve any current player skills. Upon completion of the new paddle facility, the recreation department will announce the program dates in this newspaper.

Registration will begin by mail only this Friday, Sept. 7. Please watch next week's paper for a schedule of classes and how to register.

The recreation department is pleased to announce its 2007-08 schedule of classes for its Dance Conservatory, directed by Felicia Lovaglio. Please note this is only a schedule and registration has not started. Classes are offered for students ages 3.5 to 18. A registering child must be the appropriate age by the start of the class in order to attend.

Saturday

10 a.m. Ballet/Jazz for fourth and fifth grades

11 a.m. Tap for sixth grade and up

12 p.m. Ballet/Hip Hop for sixth grade and up

1 p.m. Lyrical/Modern for sixth grade and up

Community Park's new mini golf course is now open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. Improvements to the area have created a spectacular course sure to please any mini golf devotee. Rates for the course are as follows:

Residents under 12/residents 65 or older: $3

Residents 12 or older: $5

Non-resident under 12: $4

Non-resident 12 or older: $6

Please note that until construction is finished in the area, monies will be collected at the tennis hut located just north of the tennis facility. You will then be given a ticket to turn in to the attendant at the mini golf area.
