(Editor's note: This letter was originally sent to Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy and Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer and is being printed at the author's request.)
You may think you are doing something good for your district by working to get money for a project in New York State (The Hub), but have you asked the residents impacted by this project if they think it is wanted, needed or useful?
As you know, we, in Garden City, pay a premium to maintain as much of a suburban character as we can within the village. The plan to run additional transportation routes, which will divide the village into three parts, is contrary to our wishes and detrimental to the maintenance of the village ambiance we want to keep.
If, as is expected, the Senate approves a $2 million appropriation for transportation in "the Hub" I implore you to get and consider input from us the residents.
We all know that our county executive and others welcome the Hub but do you know what those most affected by it think of it?
Further, I think it would be prudent to review the information provided to you relative to projected rider volume on the proposed transportation routes. In my opinion transportation money would be much better spent on improving and expanding current bus and railroad services to improve service over a wider area of the county.
