On Monday, July 16, the GCAA 11-year-old tournament team defeated Valley Stream 6-2 in the District 29 championship game.
The tournament began with a 4-3 victory over Floral Park. In that game, Garden City received masterful pitching from Chris Gallic and Tim Muller. Muller and John Cauchi hit home runs to power the offense and catcher Peter Luglio nailed a runner trying to steal third base for the final out of the game.
In game two under the lights at Community Park, Garden City jumped out quickly and never looked back against Franklin Square. Andrew Morra set the tone with an early home run while Jack O'Brien and Cory Fallon also contributed clutch hits. Christian Capozzi started and Fallon relieved to seal the 9-2 victory. The next day was game three against Valley Stream. Michael Famiglietti was on top of his pitching game and Chris Gallic saved the 7-2 win. This game was a total team effort. Marc Schwendemann, Joey Trapasso and Christian Capozzi delivered key hits. This victory clinched the winners bracket for Garden City. In a game four rematch with Valley Stream, who had to win to stay alive, Garden City jumped out to an early lead but Valley Stream fought back and won 14-5 forcing the fifth and deciding game.
In the championship game, Chris Gallic went the distance helped by excellent defense and timely hitting from the entire team. Aggressive base running was also key in the victory. It was fitting that the last game was a total team effort, which reflected the attitude of these district champions.
Defense wins championships and Garden City proved that during the tournament. Chris DeSimone played a solid first base in all the games, while the pairing of Jack O'Brien and Michael Perrotta at third base, Marc Schwendemann and Joey Trapasso at shortstop and John Cauchi and Nick Sampogne at second base anchored the infield. Andrew Morra was the leader in centerfield with Fallon, Famiglietti, Capozzi and Gallic sharing left and right field. Tim Muller and Peter Luglio shut down the opposing teams running game from behind the plate. All the boys worked very hard, sometimes practicing four nights a week. They would like to thank their coaches, Bob O'Brien, Tom Morra, George Perrotta and Rob DeSimone for all their time and dedication and all the parents and fans for their support. The boys now move on to the Long Island Sectionals!
