On Thursday, June 28, police report a two-car accident at Hilton Avenue and Sixth Street at approximately 4:11 p.m. in which one operator, a female Rockville Centre resident collided with a 79-year-old female from Lynbrook, ejecting the elderly woman from the car after it hit a light pole at the intersection.

According to police and fire department reports, after the woman - who was not wearing her seatbelt - was ejected, her Hyundai Elantra rolled over her, causing serious injury. Police said that witnesses told police that the Rockville Centre woman ran the red light, causing the collision.

Originally the call came in to police as a pedestrian struck. Fire department and police personnel had to lift the vehicle and remove the woman, who was immediately transported to nearby Winthrop-University Hospital via Nassau County Police ambulance. The 79-year-old later that evening succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:46 p.m.

The scene was turned over to Garden City police and Nassau County detectives, who are investigating the incident.
