The Garden City Bombers 18-year-old baseball team is now set to play against the national Dominican Republic team Wednesday, July 11, at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo. An All-Star Domincan team has been assembled for the Caribbean high school tournament, with teams from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands also participating. Estadio Quisqueya holds 14,000 people and is managed by the Dominican Baseball Authority. It is the home field of the Licey Tigers (Tigres del Licey) and the Escogido Lions (Leones del Escogido). Within the stadium is a list of all the major league greats who have played on this field and it is a long list, like all of the Alou brothers, Rico Petrocelli and dozens and dozens more. The team will be led by co-captains Andrew Rocco and Joe Mohen.
"This will be the best team we have ever played," Coach Lou Santos said. "This is as good as high school competition gets." The 18-year-old Bombers team is playing in both the Connie Mack as well as Long Island Baseball Association leagues this summer, and will play in the Caribbean from July 6-15. "We invite all Garden City residents to come down and see the game."
The Bombers are coming off four straight wins. "Our rotation has given up only four runs in our last four games, including a 13-inning game," Pitching Coach Tom Sowinski said. "Our pitching has been so deep that we won those games without having to use either Rocco or Ryan Maloney, and that tells you something. In our first five games the team had not yet jelled, but now we have come together well."
Garden City Bombers won an extremely tight pitching duel 2-1 over the IG Lighting. The pitching for Garden City was led by Dmitri Seredenko and Josh Bourgas and the Lighting was led by Pat Sylvester. Pitching Coach Sowinski predicted before the game that Seredenko's stuff was dynamic and that he was capable of pitching a no-hitter. To combat this dynamic stuff, Lighting Coach Frank Intagliata decided to play same ball with the first six batters bunting six times in a row. The Lighting scored their only run on a suicide squeeze in which Seredenko hit the runner in the back on his throw to first base. Seredenko had 9 strikeouts and scattered four walks. The defense took over the lead by two puts by Kevin O'Hanlon and a double play from center field performed by Robert Knights.
In a nip and tuck battle, the winning run was driven in, in the 11th inning, on a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 count by Joe Mohen. The Bombers won the game after the Lighting loaded the bases and the Bombers were able to make several plays to the plate.
Two evenings later The Garden City Bombers beat South Shore 11-1 led by a strong pitching performance by Jadd Schmeltzer and a strong defensive performance led by catcher Frank DeMaria, throwing out two players after they got on base. South Shore's only run was unearned by two untimely errors in a row. "Andrew Rocco continued to beat the other teams in every way conceivable with the bat, the glove and on the base paths," Santos said.
Garden City then proceeded to give their dads a Father's Day present by winning another double-header Sunday against the Long Island Mariners. The first game was a 3-0 shutout pitched by Dave Bellinger. The second game was a 7-2 win, in which Mohen singled with the bases loaded to get his second game winning RBI in one week.
