On Thursday night under the lights at Community Park, the Garden City Bombers 18-year-old team destroyed the Bellmore Blase 12-0 in the summer season opener. Co-captain Andrew Rocco combined to pitch a two-hit shutout, with closer Dmitri Seredenko blowing away Bellmore with smoke in the final inning.

"Our pitching staff is very deep this year," remarked pitching coach Tom Sowinski. "Rocco was tough to hit, and closer Seredenko was in the 90s." Sowinski is the former pitching coach of Manhattan College and Adelphi University.

The game was Garden City all the way, as Matt Colantonio doubled in the first, and with other hits by Rocco, Chris Attardi, Chris Buhse, second baseman Peter O'Hanlon.

The game ended as Kevin Fuchs playing infield grabbed a slow hit grounder and threw off balance to first base, where the throw went wide. The first base umpire originally called the Bellmore runner safe, but co-captain Joe Mohen did a first baseman's pirouette, grabbing the throw from Fuchs, and tagging the runner on the back while completing his turn. At first when the umpire made his initial safe call boos came from the stands; but moments later, as the umpire pointed at Mohen's glove and saw he retained the ball, the ump reversed the call, made the out signal, ending the game.

"This is one of the best Connie Mack teams that Garden City has ever had," remarked Manager Lou Santos. "It will be a long season, but we have a deep pitching staff, and a depth at many positions. Other teams will fear us."
