On Tuesday evening, March 6, at 7 p.m., the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be conducting a public meeting at Garden City Village Hall to discuss cleanup alternatives for the Fulton Avenue Superfund site in Garden City Park.
Beginning in 1986, numerous investigations were conducted by the Nassau County Departments of Health and Public Works to identify the sources of volatile organic compounds that were impacting a number of water wells located down gradient of the Fulton Avenue site, including the Village of Garden City Wells 13 and 14 located at the Garden City Country Club.
Since 1988 the village has been effectively cleaning this plume through the use of air stripping towers at the well sites. It is a very expensive process and litigation against the potentially responsible party, Genesco, Inc., has been commenced to recover the village's remediation costs.
The Long Island Rail Road has programmed the complete rehabilitation of the New Hyde Park Road railroad grade crossing in Garden City on the Hempstead branch for the weeks of March 5 and March 16. The work involved necessitates the complete closing of the railroad crossing in both directions and will require multiple days of road closures as detailed below:
New Hyde Park Road
On Tuesday, March 6, and Wednesday, March 7, a road closure was required between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
On Thursday, March 7, a road closure was required between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
On Monday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 14, a road closure will be required between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
On Thursday, March 15, a road closure will be required between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Upon completion of the crossing panel installation, temporary paving material will be installed between the Long Island Rail Road crossing panels and the saw cut line of the roadway.
During the week of March 19, the approaches to New Hyde Park Road crossing will be repaved (weather permitting). This effort will be between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and a minimum of a single lane of traffic will be maintained for both directions.
The following are detour routes:
