On Sunday afternoons, the St. Paul's Field House is open for family fun for village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym is available for use from noon to 3:30 p.m. each Sunday now through March.

This time is designated for residents to use on a family or individual basis. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff to monitor activity, this is not a drop-off program. The recreation department asks that an adult accompany all elementary-aged children. For the safety of the users, no lacrosse or baseball is allowed.

The recreation department is sponsoring middle school recreation nights on the following remaining dates at St. Paul's Field House:

Friday, Jan. 26 Grade 6

Friday, Feb. 9 Grade 6

Friday, March 2 Grades 7-8

These parties will be chaperoned by recreation staff and will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games. Note - once the children are in the facility for these programs, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child.

Due to popular demand, the recreation department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of Garden City. The class will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Feb. 2. The classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The cost of the 10-week program will be $105.

This 10-week program will teach the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait/landscape or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.

Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at his/her own pace and level of expertise.

Arleen Ruth Urban is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in many Garden City homes.

The recreation department's second session of adult dance classes, taught by Felicia Lovaglio, began the week of Jan. 22. This program is open to adults who live in Garden City. The following classes are offered:

Tuesdays beginning Jan. 23 at 9:30 a.m.

Stretch and Tone

Wednesdays beginning Jan. 24 at 9:45 a.m.

Ballet

Thursdays beginning Jan. 25 at 9:30 a.m.

Stretch and Tone

Saturdays beginning Jan. 27 at 11 a.m.

Jazz

The recreation department is pleased to announce that this winter, Rich Anderson and the recreation staff are conducting a gym program for children in kindergarten through grade two. This program consists of organized games and activities in a supervised setting. This program runs Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the St. Paul's Field House now through Feb. 13. The program is free and no registration is necessary. Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the Field House.

Please note that once children are in the facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. The recreation department expects all children at this age to be walked into the Field House by an adult. For further information, contact the recreation office at 465-4075.

The Garden City Recreation Department's session of yoga began the week of Jan. 22. Connie McKnight, a certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each 15-week course will cost $75 and each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. Any resident of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The description of classes is as follows:

YogaDoesit I (for relaxation and good health)

In this "gentle yoga" class, explore and discover how simple yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress, tension and improve flexibility and straighten muscles. Since yoga has been found to benefit everyone, including seniors, those with back problems, headaches, sleeping problems and other medical challenges, all are welcome. Bring a sticky mat, wear comfortable clothes and come to relax and even have some fun. Other props will be suggested at the first class. This class was formerly Yoga Over 50.

YogaDoesit II (for relaxation and fitness)

In YogaDoesit II, explore and discover the many benefits of yoga. Yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress and tension as well as straighten muscles and improve flexibility. This class includes more challenging postures so if you are looking for a good workout as well as a way to relax the mind and body, attend. Bring a sticky mat and wear comfortable clothes. Other props will be suggested at the first class.

All tennis and platform players using Community Park's facilities are requested to park in the north parking lot of Community Park. Construction is beginning on the minigolf area and the entire area south of the courts will be fenced off, with no access from the south to reach the courts. Thank you for your patience. There are limited openings available in the recreation department's second session of swimming lessons at Adelphi. Walk in registration will begin Jan. 30. Visit the recreation office and found out about availability. Classes begin Feb. 3. The recreation department has received tickets on consignment for the following performances at the Nassau Coliseum:

Tickets can be purchased at the recreation office in village hall by any resident of Garden City. Tickets must be paid for in cash only. A maximum of six tickets will be sold to any one person. On Wednesdays and Thursdays in the months of January and February, the Field House will be open and supervised from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. for students of middle and high school age to use for basketball. In addition, volleyball will be offered on Thursdays for the same age groups. The games are strictly pickup; no organized practices are allowed. This time is for middle and high school youngsters to enjoy games and socializing. Recreation staff will supervise the Field House; no parents will be allowed in the Field House during this time.

The winter session of the recreation department's Pee Wee tennis lessons begins this week. Pee Wee tennis is a beginner program for children ages 5-7 years. The following classes are still available for this level:

Mondays 4:30-5:25 p.m.

Tuesdays 3:30-4:25 p.m.

Tuesdays 4:30-5:25 p.m.

Wednesdays 3:30-4:25 p.m.

Wednesdays 4:30-5:25 p.m.

The cost of this 12-week program is $150 and is open to any child who lives in Garden City. Please note that any child registering for this program must be the appropriate age by the start of the session. To register, visit the recreation office in village hall.

Children interested in learning the game of chess or wanting to further improve their game are invited to join the Recreation Department's Youth Chess Club. This club meets every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. in the Garden City Library. Any child in Grades 3-7 who resides in Garden City can attend. This is a free program that will run until March.

The recreation department is announcing the start of interviews for summer jobs at the Garden City Pool. If you enjoy being outdoors and are willing to make a commitment to being a part of a team that works hard to provide quality facilities for residents, the recreation department would like to meet you.

If you are presently a high school junior or older and are looking for a summer job, stop by the recreation office in village hall, pick up an application and sign up for an interview. Reminder: Even if the pool employed you last year you are still required to re-apply and be interviewed for the upcoming pool season.

Interviews will be conducted at village hall on the remaining date: Saturday, Jan. 27.

The recreation department's adult swim program resumed at Adelphi's indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall, Jan. 8. This free program is open to any adult resident of the village, aged 18 or older. The recreation adult programs in the Field House take place according to the following schedule:
Mondays Men's Open Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.
Men's Over-40 Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.
Tuesdays Men's Over-30 Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.
Wednesdays Men's Open Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.
Men's Over-40 Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.
Thursdays Adult Volleyball 7:30-10 p.m.
Adult Soccer 8:30-10 p.m.
These programs are open to residents of the village who have graduated from high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly "pickup." A picture ID is required to sign in to any program. For further information, contact the recreation office at 465-4075.

Instructors are up-to-date on the latest moves to keep you interested while exercising. Pat and Joy have years of experience and can show the individual how to modify the exercises to their levels. To attend a single class, show up on the given day and pay $4. To attend regularly, 20 class passes can be purchased for $60, a savings of $1 per class. Garden City Recreation starts its second session of its youth platform tennis program this Friday, Jan. 26, held at the platform courts at Garden City Community Park.

This five-week program is open to any child in Grades 6-12 who lives in Garden City. The cost of the program is $100. The schedule is as follows:

Grades 9-12 Fridays 6-7:30 p.m.

Grades 6-8 Fridays 7:30-9 p.m.
