Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy was named chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities.
"I am excited at this new opportunity. It is time Congress puts the needs of our families and communities first, and I look forward to leading that charge in the House," McCarthy said.
The subcommittee will focus its work on expanding youth programs, child abuse prevention, low-income home energy assistance programs, services for the elderly and an array of other issues.
"Since I was first elected in 1996, I have focused my attention on the well-being of the families and communities in my district. We have made significant progress in the 4th Congressional District, and I am confident we can achieve great results throughout our nation. Together, with my colleagues on the subcommittee, we will work for a better tomorrow."
