Adelphi University has received a $5 million New York State grant for the construction of its state-of-the-art performing arts center, which will allow Adelphi to become a cultural arts anchor and a vital resource for the Long Island region. The grant, announced by Adelphi President Robert A. Scott Nov. 1 on the Garden City campus, was made possible through the leadership of Senator Michael Balboni '81 and his fellow senators from Nassau County.

"Adelphi University is grateful to Senator Balboni and his colleagues for their time and support of Adelphi's service to the region through our academic, cultural, research and outreach programs," President Scott said. "By fostering a greater sense of community, the new performing arts center will reinforce Adelphi's role as the 'engaged' university. The grant launches a new era in Adelphi's deep commitment to excellence in the performing arts, which includes preparing future generations of artists."

Senator Balboni added, "This funding will go a long way toward enhancing the university's already fine performing arts programs and will be music to the ears of area high school musicians and regional music groups who will also be able to utilize this state-of-the art new facility."

The grant will fund a significant portion of the construction for a new 53,000 square-foot performing arts center, which includes an upgrade and expansion of Adelphi's 31-year-old Olmsted Theatre as well as a 500-seat music auditorium and dance performance space. The new center will also offer needed rehearsal and classroom space for highly regarded programs in theater, dance and music and will serve as a new cultural arts venue to be enjoyed by members of the Adelphi community as well as area residents.

Currently under construction and due to open in 2008, the performing arts center will enable Adelphi to host the most sought-after artists and world-class performers as well as performances by regional middle and high school students and Adelphi students. Up to this point, Adelphi's performing arts facilities have been limited in capacity and accessibility. The new facility will be entirely ADA compliant, ensuring full access for individuals with disabilities.

Construction of Adelphi's new $30.3 million performing arts center will contribute more than $62 million to the output of goods and services on Long Island. The new performing arts center will also create an estimated 478 new jobs and increase earnings by nearly $20 million on Long Island, according to regional economists.

The performing arts center is part of Adelphi's $113 million campus enhancement project now under way. By investing in its facilities, Adelphi officials believe they can create an even more welcoming campus and remain a top choice for students in the region, ensuring that students can pursue their artistic passions and receive the preparation they need to succeed.
