The recreation department's adult swim program began Monday, Oct. 16 at Adelphi's indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult resident of the village ages 18 or older. The pool is open for lap swimming on Mondays through Thursdays in one-hour time blocks at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the recreation office. You must register each day you would like to swim by calling the recreation office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time and space is limited.
The recreation adult programs in the field house began Monday, Oct. 16, according to the following schedule:

Tuesdays Men's Over-30 Basketball 7:30-10 p.m.

These programs are open to residents of the village who have graduated from high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly "pick up." A picture ID is required to sign in to any program. For further information, contact the recreation office at 465-4075.
The recreation department will be conducting children's swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University Swimming Pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be 6 years of age by the start of the program in order to participate. The classes will begin Saturday, Oct. 28. Red Cross certified instructors will teach the lessons. The cost is $40. To register, mail the form and check to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Walk-in registrations are now being accepted.
Level 1 introduction to water skills
Level 2 for children who have taken a lesson but need to learn fundamental skills
Level 3 will build on fundamental skills by providing guided practices
Level 4 develops confidence in the strokes learned and improves other aquatic skills
Level 5 provides further coordination and refinement of strokes
Level 6P personal water safety - for children who have passed Red Cross Level 6 or 7; it stresses survival floating, treading water, swimming in clothes, etc.
Level 6F water fitness - for children who have passed Red Cross Level 6 or 7; sessions will cover learning training techniques, how to use fins, kickboards, pace, clock, etc.

Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable. To register by mail pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall. You can also make your own by listing your child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she entered in September and the class for which you are registering. Make sure to include a second choice of classes. Mail all information, with full payment, to the Garden City Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Make all checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."
The recreation department's Dance Conservatory is now offering a ballet and tap combo class for fourth-graders and up on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. This hour-long class began Wednesday, Oct. 18, and runs for 22 weeks at a cost of $176. This class is open to any resident of Garden City. To register for this class, visit the recreation office in village hall.
The recreation department will be offering a six-week arts and crafts workshop for village resident preschoolers. These classes are held once a week in a 45-minute session at Cluett Hall. Children must be 3 1/2 years old at the start of the class. The six-week session will be held on the following days - Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. and Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. - and started this week. The cost of these workshops is $30. To register, visit the recreation office in village hall.
The recreation department's fall yoga season began the week of Oct. 2. Certified yoga instructor Connie McKnight has designed the classes with all ages in mind. Any village resident is invited to join. The description of classes is listed below:
YogaDoesit 1 (for relaxation and good health)
In this "gentle yoga" class, explore and discover how simple yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress, tension and improve flexibility and strengthen muscles. Since yoga has been found to benefit everyone including seniors, those with back problems, headaches, sleeping problems and other medical challenges, all are welcome. Bring a sticky mat, wear comfortable clothes and come to relax and even have some fun. Other props will be suggested at the first class. This class was formerly Yoga Over 50.
YogaDoesit 2 (for relaxation and fitness)
In YogaDoesit 2, explore and discover the many benefits of yoga. Yoga postures and breath work will help to relieve stress and tension as well as strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. This class will include more challenging postures than YogaDoesit 1. Bring a sticky mat and wear comfortable clothes. Other props will be suggested at the first class.

Instructors are up-to-date on the latest moves to keep you interested while exercising. Pat and Joy have years of experience and can show the individual how to modify the exercises to their levels.
