On Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Waldorf School of Garden City, the Garden City Checkmate Sharks will hold tryouts for the seventh/eighth-grade spring lacrosse team. Tryouts will be open to all current seventh- and eighth-graders residing in Garden City.
This winter the Sharks will participate in Brooks Sweet's Indoor Lacrosse League in Oceanside. The spring season is expected to start in March with practices on Saturday and Sunday for the first three weeks. After school practices will start the week of March 26 with games commencing March 31. The US Merchant Marine Academy lacrosse league will start April 1 and the Sharks are tentatively scheduled to play again at Rutgers University on either April 21 (Rutgers vs Penn State) or May 5 (Rutgers vs UMass.) In addition to the normal competitive schedule, the Sharks have lined up Duxbury, Mass. to come down to Long Island May 19 and again are scheduled to play in the round robin tournament held during the NCAA's finals weekend in Towson, MD. The commitment will also include mandatory participation in two summer Long Island tournaments held during July.
Practices will be held after school each day as stated above. Boys will be unable to play lacrosse for both the middle school lacrosse program as well as the Sharks.
Registration will start at 2:30 p.m. and tryouts will be held from 3-5 p.m. Rain date will be Sunday, Nov. 5, at the same times. All up-to-date information as well as a required registration form can be found at www.GCSharks.com. There will be a tryout fee of $20 for all participants to cover insurance and field costs. Checks should be made payable to Checkmate Lacrosse. All registration forms should be faxed to 888-304-7047 prior to trying out. Each player must pre-register for insurance purposes. There will be no walk ups permitted.
