Come join the recreation department this Friday, Sept. 15, at noon for a lunchtime concert on Seventh Street. Listen to the sounds of The Clusters. The concerts will take place in the plaza in front of Chico's and You-nique Bow-tique. Bring a lunch and enjoy the music.
The recreation department's new Senior Recreation Center, located in the St. Paul's cottages off of Rockaway Avenue, is now open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for use by Garden City's senior residents. Seniors, aged 60 or older and their guests are invited to come and use the facility. For further information, call the recreation office at 465-4075.
Due to popular demand, the Garden City Recreation Department is again offering an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of Garden City. The class runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays and began Sept. 8. The classes are held at Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The cost of the 10-week program is $105.
This 10-week program teaches the beginner, as well as advanced student, the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students are given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.
Demonstrations are available as needed throughout the program. Each student receives the individual attention required to work at his/her own pace and level of expertise.
Arleen Ruth Urban is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in many Garden City homes.
To register, visit the recreation office in village hall.
The Garden City Recreation Department offers adult tennis lessons in 10-week sessions. The lessons are open to all adults who live in Garden City and are offered at various times during the day and on the weekends.
If interested in lessons for the upcoming fall season, which begins the week of Sept. 25, visit the recreation office in village hall to fill out an interest form no later than Sept. 19. Classes will be put together according to ability and day desired on a first come, first serve basis. You will be contacted by the tennis pro, Carrie Strum, to confirm your class.
The cost of the 10-week, one-hour program will be $199. Payment must accompany the interest form. Make checks payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City."
The recreation department is also offering an Adult Ultimate Tennis Workout. This one-and-a-half hour workout is for the experienced tennis player who wants to hone his/her skills. It is held on Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. This program will be offered in 10-week sessions with a start date of Sept. 30. The cost of the session is $200. To register for this program, visit the recreation office in village hall.
The recreation department is pleased to announce the start of registration for the indoor tennis program for children, which is held at the Community Park tennis facility. Registration begins immediately by mail only. Walk-ins are also now being accepted. Mail the registration slip and registration fee to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable.
To register by mail, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall. Applications were also distributed in the schools during the first week. You can also make your own by listing your child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the session and classes for which he/she is registering for. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Make checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."

The recreation department's Dance Conservatory Program is pleased to announce the start of registration for its upcoming 2006-07 season. Director Felicia Lovaglio, along with her instructional staff, Kate DeAngelo, Kerry-Jeanne Griffin, Jenna Loepki, Mary Searson and Amanda Simolari, are excited to start off another fantastic year. The Dance Conservatory offers classes to Garden City residents ages 3.5-adult, which are non-performance based, as well as giving the students ages 8 and up the opportunity to join the recreation department's Dance Company, which has separate rehearsals leading to a spring performance.
The schedule and fees for this year's youth classes are as follows. All classes are 55 minutes long unless otherwise noted:
