Kevin Ocker, director of Garden City's Recreational/Cultural Affairs, offered good news for the many residents who have been anxiously awaiting the grand opening of the new senior center at the cottages near St. Paul's - the facility will officially open its doors this Thursday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m.
Residents are welcome to attend a special ribbon cutting ceremony to be held at 10:30 a.m. at the site. As of press time, it wasn't confirmed who would be attending the ribbon cutting.
Sue Salko, LMSW, coordinator of the Garden City Senior Project, told Garden City Life: "I am very pleased that the Garden City community is responding to their senior citizens in this important undertaking, which will offer them an additional opportunity for socialization and fellowship."
According to Ocker, John Ellis Kordes, village historian and professional photographer, will present a lecture on St. Paul's and also discuss the artwork that decorates the facility's walls. The center, according to Ocker, will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the existing senior center on Golf Club Lane will continue to offer programs for Garden City's seniors as well.
The project has been a long time in the making and many are excited that the center is yet another way Garden City is catering to its growing senior population. "We're excited about this," Ocker said.
