As a result of input from the village planning consultant, Buckhurst, Fish & Jacquemart, village counsel and staff and what we have heard at a series of recent public hearings, the proposed local law with regard to the C-3 District and assisted living had been further amended and was adopted by the Village Board of Trustees June 1.

The local law accomplishes the following: allows townhouses or 8,000 square foot single family plots on the former Newsday property on the north side of Stewart Avenue; cleans up many antiquated uses in the C-3 District such as a mortuary, theater and warehouse. The C-3 District is on the south side of Stewart Avenue from Clinton Road to the eastern boundary of the village and the south end of both sides of Franklin Avenue; amends the zoning of the property in front of the Marine Corps Base from R-6 to C-3; amends the front setback in the C-3 on the south side of Stewart Avenue from 90 to 200 feet; adds assisted living as a permitted use wherever R-M or R-A multifamily uses are permitted; adds a definition of "assisted living residence" and a parking requirement of one-half car per assisted living residence unit.

The board of trustees meeting for this Thursday, June 15, will be held at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Garden City Middle School. Karen Backus Associates, the real estate consultant that the village retained to assess the feasibility of private redevelopment of the Main Building at St. Paul's, will be providing the board of trustees with a project update at this meeting.

There will be no Traffic Commission meeting June 15.

By an Act of Congress, dated August 3, 1949, June 14 of each year was designated "National Flag Day" and the week in which June 14 occurs as "National Flag Week." The "Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance" was made an official Flag Day ceremony by an Act of Congress in 1985.

The National Flag Day Foundation, Inc. is asking all citizens of the United States to display the flag during that week and that all Americans join in the annual "Pause for the Pledge" ceremony June 14 at 7 p.m. by reciting in unison the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and nation. Please remember that displaying the flag at night requires proper illumination.

The village's solicitation law prohibits all unwanted commercial solicitations and distributions on all private residential property in the village and prohibits non-commercial solicitations and distributions on private property to the extent desired by the resident. This law was designed to protect residents from unwanted invasions of their privacy.

Any resident requesting not to be solicited should complete a "Notice of Objection" form at Garden City Village Hall.
