The Garden City Bomber's Andrew Rocco struck out nine batters, winning a two-hit complete game, in the Connie Mack season opener Tuesday, May 30 at St. Paul's against the East Coast Hawks from Valley Stream.

The game was called on darkness after five innings, but was official as the requisite five innings were completed. This summer, the Bombers are playing in Connie Mack's 17- to 18-year-old wooden bat league, with a coaching staff led by the storied Lou Santos.

In the bottom of the second, shortstop Chris Attardi and rightfielder Chris Buhse hit back-to-back singles, but were left stranded. In the third, the Bombers scored their first run when second baseman Pete O'Hanlon reached an error. O'Hanlon promptly stole second base, and then scored on a single by Rocco, barely beating out a throw that was just wide of the plate. Rocco went to second on the play. Three batters later with the bases loaded, Chris Attardi walked in Rocco with what proved to be the winning run.
