The fifth-grade Lady Rams lacrosse team, led by coaches Shannon, Jahelka and Coleman, cruised to a season-opening 9-5 victory over host Huntington Village April 2.
The Lady Rams jumped to a quick 2-0 advantage on goals by Bitty Furnan and Jacqueline Jahelka on their way to a 4-3 halftime lead. Also scoring first-half goals were Addie Zebrowski and Lily Schmitt.
Mary Glenn opened up the second-half scoring to put the Rams up 5-3, and her second goal of the afternoon made the score 6-4. Jacqueline Jahelka tallied two more goals (three on the day) and Megen Higgins added a fourth-quarter goal as the Lady Rams were never threatened in the second half.
Strong attack play led to assists for Haley Shannon, Kelly Quinn, Katie Rizzo, Olivia Zimmer and Erica Giarrupto. Emily Betts, Amanda Diller, Emily Priest and Kathryn LaRiviere dominated midfield play as they constantly out-hustled Huntington Village and controlled the groundball game.
Johanna Fitzpatrick and Olivia Zimmer provided solid goal keeping and were well-protected by the swarming defensive play of Marie Cristoforo, Sarah LaRieviere and Lauren Coleman as the defenders stifled Huntington Village's attempt to mount a comeback.
