From the Mayor's Office

Congratulations to Trustees Peter A. Bee, John L. Mauk, John J. Watras and Donald T. Brudie on their election March 21. It is gratifying to note that the affairs of our village will remain in such capable hands.

Last week I had the pleasure of delivering meals to the homebound as part of the "Mayors for Meals" campaign. The Nassau County Meals on Wheels Program, now in its 29th year, is funded by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs and coordinated locally by community-based agencies. It annually serves more than 2,000 frail older persons who are homebound and unable to cook or shop for themselves. Participants receive two nutritious meals per day, up to five days per week. In addition, a trained social worker assesses their needs and remains in contact with them to help coordinate any other necessary services.

For further information about nutrition programs for Nassau County seniors, call the Department of Senior Citizen Affairs Senior HELP-LINE at 227-8900.

I would like to thank the residents and employees who donated blood Tuesday, March 21. I am pleased to report that over 23 pints of blood were collected. You can feel proud of your personal involvement in helping those who depend on blood for life giving support

Since there is no substitute for human blood, and no way of knowing when it may be needed to save or sustain the life of a family member, a co-worker, a friend or other members of the community, we must be sure that enough blood is available at all times to meet the needs of our area's hospitals and their patients.

Again, thank you and we look forward to your participation in our next blood drive in October.

The annual Easter Festival and Antique Car Parade, sponsored by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 16. The parade will step off from Parking Field 9E and will proceed south on Franklin Avenue to Seventh Street, west to Hilton Avenue, north to Stewart Avenue and will terminate in Parking Field 7N opposite Garden City Village Hall.

Please take time from your busy day and bring the family down to see a great Garden City event.
