The recreation department's Chess Club for children has one meeting date left: this Saturday, March 18. The Chess Club meets from noon to 2 p.m. This free program is held on the lower level of the Garden City Library. There are openings still available for the recreation department's preschool arts and crafts program at Cluett Hall. This six-week program is open to any child aged 3 1/2 through 5 years old who lives in Garden City. The cost of this program is $30. Registration is ongoing for the recreation department's roller hockey program for the following age groups:

Rookies: ages 5-7 with no experience - the program is so popular that the department has opened another section. This learn-and-play clinic runs from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoons as of March 12. The cost of this eight-week program is $60.

Juniors: ages 9 and 10 - held Friday afternoons from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. and began March 10. This program is played in an intramural league format. Children are placed on teams, play a six-week intramural schedule and then have a playoff. The cost of this program is $60. There is room for 10 more children in this age group.

Intermediates: ages 11-14 - this program has been moved to Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m. instead of Wednesdays so as not to interfere with school. The format of this league is the same as the Juniors above. The cost is $60.
