Open Space Improvements Come to Temporary Halt
The open space improvements taking shape at St. Paul's have come to a temporary halt due to financial problems the general contractor is facing. Kevin Ocker, chairman of the board of commissioners of Cultural and Recreational Affairs, is drafting a notice of default to the general contractor hired to construct the playground and comfort station. "Needless to say we're disappointed but the general contractor has significant internal problems," Ocker said.
Village Mandates Removal of Large Rocks in Right-of-Way
Patricia Cunningham of Hilton Avenue is one of 42 Garden City residents who recently received a village-issued letter mandating that the rocks in front of her home be removed within 10 days of such letter. The rocks, according to Robert Mangan, director of Public Works, violate the village code, which prohibits obstructions to be placed in the village right-of-way.
A Record 17th Annual Golf Classic for Adelphi University
Adelphi University's 17th annual golf classic Sept. 26 raised a record $120,000 for student athletic scholarships as more than 220 alumni and friends hit the links at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City. The festive day-long event honored Patrick Smalley '86, executive vice president of Fairhaven Properties Inc. and The Garden City Hotel, with the 2005 President's Award for Outstanding Achievement and Friendship.
NY Celebrates its Heritage as Cradle of Horse Racing in America
A transatlantic celebration that spans two countries and five days will commemorate the 340th anniversary of horse racing in America, culminating in a re-enactment of the inaugural race during the opening ceremonies of the 22nd Annual Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Belmont Park Saturday, Oct. 29. The event will serve to highlight the historical underpinnings of New York State's role in the emergence of thoroughbred racing in the centuries that followed the staging of America's first race in 1665 on land that today is located in Garden City.
