Come join the recreation department this Friday, Sept. 23, at noon for a lunchtime concert on Seventh Street. Residents will be entertained by the sounds of the Tom Wagner Jazz Quartet. The concert will take place in the plaza in front of Chico's and You-nique Bow-tique. Bring a lunch and enjoy the music.
The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce it is now opening registration for the Dance Conservatory Program. All classes begin the week of Sept. 26. A child must be 4 years of age to begin classes with the exception of Creative Movement. A child must be preschool age for Creative Movement, must be toilet trained and must be able to stay alone in a supervised setting. The schedule is as follows (all classes are one hour in length):
Due to popular demand, the recreation department is again offering an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult village residents. The class, which began Sept. 9, runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. The classes are being held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The registration fee for this program is $105. A list of art supplies to be purchased was given out at the first class. This 10-week program teaches the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students are given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice. Demonstrations are available as needed throughout the program. Each student receives the individual attention required to work at his/her own pace and level of expertise. Urban is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in many Garden City homes. To register, visit the recreation office in village hall. The recreation department offers adult tennis lessons at the Community Park tennis facility in 10-week sessions. The lessons are open to all adults who reside in Garden City and are offered at various times during the day and on the weekends. If interested in lessons for the upcoming fall season, which begins Saturday, Oct. 1, visit the recreation office in village hall to fill out an interest form now. Classes will then be put together according to ability of the player and day desired. Participants will be contacted by the tennis pro to confirm their class. The cost of this 10-week, one-hour program is $199. Payment must accompany this interest form. Make checks payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City." Adult Ultimate Workout - this one-and-a-half-hour workout is for the experienced tennis player who wants to hone skills. It is held Saturdays between 10 to 11:30 a.m. This program will be offered in 10-week sessions with the following start dates: Oct. 1 and Jan. 7, 2006. The cost of each session is $200. To register for this program, visit the recreation office at village hall. The Garden City Recreation Department began accepting mail-in registrations for its children's indoor tennis program Wednesday, Sept. 7. These classes are held at the Community Park tennis facility behind the Garden City Pool. Children ages 4-18 who are residents of the village are invited to participate. Registration is by mail only. Residents can register their child for the fall or winter session or both at this time. However, full payment must accompany registration. Walk-ins are being accepted as of Sept. 14. Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable. To register by mail only, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall. Residents can also make their own by listing their child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering this month and the session and classes for which they are registering. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department, 351 Stewart Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530. Make checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."
