Come join the recreation department this Friday, Sept. 9, at noon for a lunchtime concert on Seventh Street. Blue Heron Entertainment, featuring Susan Shutt, will entertain with the beautiful jazz sounds of Dizzy Gillespie, Cole Porter and many others. The concert will take place on the plaza in front of Chico's and You-nique Bow-tique. Bring lunch and enjoy the music.

Due to popular demand, the recreation department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult village residents. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Sept. 9. The classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The registration fee for this program is $105. A list of art supplies to be purchased will be given out at the first class.

This 10-week program will teach the beginner as well as the advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice. Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at his/her own pace and level of expertise.

Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in many Garden City homes. To register, visit the recreation office in village hall.

The recreation department offers adult tennis lessons at the Community Park tennis facility in 10-week sessions. The lessons are open to all adults who reside in Garden City and are offered at various times during the day and on the weekends.

If interested in lessons for the upcoming fall season, which begins Saturday, Oct. 1, visit the recreation office in village hall to fill out an interest form no later than Sept. 21. Classes will then be put together according to ability of the player and day desired. Participants will be contacted by the tennis pro to confirm their class.

The cost of this 10-week, one-hour program is $199. Payment must accompany this interest form. Make checks payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City."

Adult Ultimate Workout - this one-and-a-half hour workout is for the experienced tennis player who wants to hone skills. It is held on Saturdays between 10-11:30 a.m. This program will be offered in 10-week sessions with the following start dates: Oct. 1 and Jan. 7. The cost of each session is $200. To register for this program, visit the recreation office at village hall.

The recreation department is offering roller hockey in a learn-and-play format for children ages 5-7 who reside in Garden City. This program will take place on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. on Community Park's hockey rinks. The cost of the eight-week program is $60. Players must provide their own equipment. The Garden City Recreation Department will begin accepting mail-in registrations for its children's indoor tennis program Wednesday, Sept. 7. These classes are held at the Community Park tennis facility behind the Garden City Pool. Children ages 4-18 who are residents of the village are invited to participate.

Registration is by mail only. Residents can register their child for the fall or winter session or both at this time. However, full payment must accompany registration. Walk-ins will be accepted beginning Sept. 14. Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable.

To register by mail only beginning Sept. 7, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall. Residents can also make their own by listing their child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering this month and the session and classes for which they are registering. Mail all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department, 351 Stewart Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530. Make checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."

For ages 9-18 screening and information session will be held Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. The cost of the program is $160 for 10 weeks. Pre-registration and payment are necessary for this program. For ages 9-18 tryout program - tryouts will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18. The player must pre-register and attend one of the two dates listed. The cost of this program is $275 to be paid when the teams are announced.
