"In the course of any given day, we all take advantage of technology to conduct business. Using a credit card, paying a utility bill online and Internet shopping have become part of our daily routine. Financial transactions have become so simple that we often overlook the possibility of our personal financial information falling into the wrong hands.

"Identity theft has become an all too common occurrence on Long Island and across the country. By possessing a seemingly meaningless piece of personal information, identity thieves can easily gain access to your Social Security number, credit card accounts, bank accounts, address and phone numbers.

"I am proud to have supported legislation that led to increased penalties for those convicted of identity theft. Congress has set strict sentencing guidelines applying to bank, wire or mail fraud. Those convicted of aggravated identity theft would be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and face hefty fines. Those who steal identities in connection with a terrorist act would get a minimum of 25 years in prison. Identity thieves involved in drug trafficking would be sentenced to a minimum of 20 years.

"However, there is still plenty we can do to prevent identity theft from occurring. The Federal Trade Commission offers a useful list of preventative measures you can take to minimize the risk of identity theft. The report also details the steps to take if you suspect you are a victim of identity theft.
