The recreation department's summer playground program has begun in all the parks. All resident school-aged children are invited to come to their neighborhood park and join in organized games and activities. Tullamore, Nassau Haven, Edgemere, Grove and Hemlock parks each have a staff of enthusiastic young people arranging activities like softball, dodge ball, flag football and tournaments. The arts and crafts staff will offer a project each morning at 10 a.m. (Monday through Friday). All of these activities are free. For further information, visit your neighborhood park. The recreation department's summer men's basketball program will take place Wednesday evenings between 7:30-10 p.m. in the Field House at St. Paul's. The games are strictly pickup and the program is open to any adult who is a resident of Garden City. This program will run until Aug. 17. The recreation department's adult stretch class, taught by Felicia Lovaglio, will begin its summer session this Friday, July 8. The hour-long stretch class incorporates basic dance moves and stretches to relaxing music. The program is designed to promote flexibility in a relaxed setting. Those interested can register for either Tuesdays or Fridays, or choose both for maximum flexibility. The schedule is as follows:

All concerts begin at 7:15 p.m. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The recreation department's summer chess club began meeting Tuesday, July 12 in the small meeting room at the Garden City Library. The club runs each Tuesday between 4-6 p.m. through Aug. 16. Paul Dooher again moderates this program, which is open to third through seventh graders. No registration is needed. The recreation department will be conducting a preschool camp for girls and boys 3.5-5 years old who reside in the village. Children who attend this camp must be 3.5 years by the start of the session they choose. This camp will be held at Cluett Hall at St. Paul's from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The cost of each one-week session is $75. Arts and crafts, music, nature and stories will fill the one and one half-hour class. The sessions are as follow:

Session V Aug. 8-15
Children must be 3.5 years old by the start of the class. A copy of the child's birth certificate must accompany the registration. To register by mail - walk-in registrations are also now accepted - pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall or at St. Paul's. Residents can also make their own by listing their child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the camp he/she is registering for. Mail all information with payment to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Please make checks payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City. The recreation department cannot be held responsible for delays in the mail. There are still openings available in the recreation department's summer field hockey camp for girls entering grades 4-7 in September. This camp will be held the week of July 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Garden City Community Park's soccer field. The cost of this camp is $90. For further information or to register for this camp, visit the recreation office in village hall. The Garden City Recreation Department will conduct evening tennis lessons for adults who reside in the village. The lessons will be held at the Garden City Community Park tennis facility and will run in three- and four-week sessions. There will be a maximum of four players on a court. The dates, times and fee will be as follows:

Weekend times are available upon request. The department will also offer the popular Ultimate Workout Program for adults Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. on the following dates:

Session 2 meeting dates are July 12, 19, 26 and Aug. 2, 9

The cost of each session of Ultimate Workout is $100. Applications for these programs can be picked up at the recreation department or at the Tennis Hut at Community Park.
