Chris Massey, a Garden City native, was named MLL Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a career high five goals, including the game-winner, and adding one assist to lead the Lizards to their second straight win, a 19-14 decision over Philadelphia. Massey is currently tied with teammate Blake Miller with 10 goals, which leads the league. He also has three assists for 13 points in only three games.
Massey has an occupation that is unique for a professional athlete. He's an attorney at the New York and New Jersey offices of Bressler, Amery & Ross, working in their Corporate Litigation department. While the MLL has a number of "Weekend Warriors," such as stockbrokers, teachers, accountants and even actors, Massey is the only lawyer to ever play in Major League Lacrosse.
"Being an attorney can definitely be stressful sometimes," Massey said. "Playing lacrosse is a great way to vent frustrations that can arise from my full-time job."
Massey graduated from Princeton University in 1998, and began attending Brooklyn Law School in 2001 while playing Major League Lacrosse. He worked at Bressler for the last two summers, and passed both the New York and New Jersey Bar exams during the 2004 MLL season. After graduating from law school, he accepted his current position with Bressler in September 2004.
"Playing in the MLL helped me pay for law school," Massey noted. "I'll play as long as I can though, it's something I thoroughly enjoy. There's nothing better then playing against the highest level of competition."
Massey also enjoys the camaraderie with teammates and people around the league. The Garden City native just recently moved to Manhattan.
