Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy called on Congress and the Bush administration to reverse the decision calling for New York to pay back $125 million in aid intended for those injured while responding to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
"The brave men and women who rushed to the scene to try to save lives are still feeling the effects of illness and injuries incurred because of their courage and selflessness," McCarthy said. "It is irresponsible and shortsighted to return millions of dollars in aid that is still so desperately needed."
Both Republican and Democratic members of the New York Congressional delegation and several workers injured during rescue operations following the attacks joined McCarthy. The federal government has called on New York to return an unused portion of the $20 billion in aid the state received after the attacks. McCarthy and her colleagues argue that this money is still needed as many injuries and illnesses incurred by rescue workers have not yet been diagnosed.
"Before coming to Congress, I worked as a nurse and I know it can take time for individuals exposed to toxins to show symptoms of illness," she said. "Many of those who answered the call on September 11 do not yet know the full extent of their injuries.
"The federal government must review the health needs of those injured at Ground Zero before they even consider taking back New York's funding," McCarthy continued. "I am confident any such review would reveal the obvious need for this funding and we can finally ensure those in need will receive the care they deserve."
