Residents will have an opportunity to voice concerns and ask questions of the Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) Main Line Corridor Improvement Project during public meetings Tuesday, June 14, at Jericho Terrace, located at 249 Jericho Turnpike in Mineola; Thursday, June 16, at Floral Terrace, located at 250 Jericho Turnpike in Floral Park; and Tuesday, June 21, at Antuns, located at 244 Old Country Road in Hicksville. Meetings will be held between 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on each of the aforementioned dates.
The improvement project, now undergoing an environmental review, seeks to eliminate various grade crossings, make improvements to bridges and stations in the area and add an additional third rail to the Main Line, affecting communities along the 11.5-mile corridor between Queens Village and Hicksville.
During this scoping process, LIRR President James Dermody is seeking public input regarding the project and said all information collected will be incorporated into the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), being prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. The LIRR is preparing the EIS with the assistance of its environmental consultant, DMJM Harris.
LIRR officials have mailed an informational brochure to approximately 18,000 addresses, reaching some 60,000 local residents, explaining the project's specifics. To those residents that have not received a LIRR brochure via mail, Garden City officials are in the process of obtaining more copies. Further, those who'd like to receive more project information or add his/her name to the mailing list for notification of meetings and other documents, contact Peter Palamaro, LIRR Public Affairs Department, Jamaica Station 1131, Jamaica, NY 11435 or by phone at (718) 558-7934.
Mayor Gerard Lundquist urges residents to attend and have their voices heard.
