As a result of the board of trustees' action in December 2004, several improvements have been approved for the St. Paul's Recreational Complex. In the next several weeks work will begin on the new field side comfort station, sanitary sewer and state-of-the-art playground with gazebo and safety surfacing throughout. Over the next four months these new enhancements to St. Paul's will be completed. Although the construction site will be fenced we ask all residents to use caution when visiting St. Paul's to use the athletic fields.
It is gratifying to see all of the community activity at the St. Paul's complex during the afternoon and evening hours during the week and throughout the day on weekends. When visiting St. Paul's please drive with caution and be aware that the children may not be paying attention to vehicles entering and exiting the complex.
It is also important to only park in the paved area that has been designated for parking. Please do not park on the unpaved areas as it leaves ruts, which are dangerous and unsightly. Do not park in the areas that have been designated as "fire lanes." These lanes have to be left open to allow access by fire apparatus. Persons parking in the fire lanes will risk receiving a parking ticket.
Verizon fiber optic telephone cable is being installed throughout the village. This will involve personnel from Verizon entering their right-of-way through residents' properties. Verizon has been instructed to advise the Incorporated Village of Garden City and residents in advance of their entering onto private property.
An organization known as "Keep Your Neighborhood Beautiful" has sent fliers to a number of residences in Garden City and other villages informing them that Verizon is installing above-ground junction cabinets in front of residential homes and encouraging residents to call the mayor's office in order to stop the installations. During the past week, we have received a large number of telephone calls and have informed residents that all of the cabinets have been installed and that no additional cabinets are to be installed.
The overall project will continue throughout the summer.
A number of thoughtful residents have been inconvenienced by placing plastic flats and flower pots in with their recycling box. Village personnel advise that although these items may have the recycling symbol, they are not recyclable by the village. The types of plastic containers that can be recycled in your recycling box are beverage, food, detergent, milk and non-toxic household cleaners.
Some examples of a number one plastic container would be soda, mouthwash, salad dressing bottles, peanut butter jars, etc. Some examples of number two plastic containers would be milk jugs, water, juice and shampoo bottles, as well as liquid detergent containers. All containers must be rinsed of all food or beverage residue. Other plastics with the symbols "3" through "7" are to be disposed of as garbage or rubbish. Examples of non-acceptable plastics include toys, utensils, cups, plates, motor oil plastic containers, etc. Any questions should be referred to the Department of Public Works at 465-4030.
Please observe the village's Sanitation Guidelines by adhering to the following instructions: Rubbish should be placed at the curb Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning. Sharp objects, such as broken glass, sharp pieces of metal and knives should not be placed loosely in plastic or paper bags. Proper precaution should be taken, such as placing them in cardboard boxes tied with string or tape. Other helpful information regarding village recyclable and sanitation collection can be found in the Welcome to Garden City Handbook, which is available at village hall.
