Arlene Braun Cheney, longtime resident of Garden City, died March 25, 2005. She was born July 6, 1923, in Hollis, Queens, the only child of Margaret and Albert Braun of the Braun Brush Co. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and went on to receive her bachelor's degree in 1944 from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. Mrs. Cheney then worked in the accounting department at Exxon in downtown Manhattan until 1953 when she left Exxon to teach school at a one-room schoolhouse in Townsend, VT. She was introduced to her future husband, Max Cheney, on a blind date. They were married in 1956. Mr. Cheney joined the Braun Brush Co. family business and purchased it from Albert Braun upon Albert's retirement. Arlene and Max settled in Garden City in 1966 where they raised their two children Linda and Lance.
Mrs. Cheney was a full time mother, active participant in the community and a devout and dedicated church member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, East Williston. Over the years she participated in the Long Island Panhellenic, the Historical Society, the Garden Club, and the Garden City Assembly.
Arlene Cheney enjoyed tennis at the Casino and golf at Cherry Valley Country Club. She also enjoyed bridge and skiing in the winter and the Garden City swimming pool and the LI beaches in the summer. Mrs. and Mr. Cheney traveled extensively up until Mr. Cheney's passing two years ago.
Those who knew Arlene Cheney are sure to remember her love of life, and her friendly, inclusive, generous and loving nature.
She is survived by her two children, Linda Cheney living in Manhattan, Lance Cheney and his wife Susan of Glen Cove and three grandchildren, Max W. Cheney II, Beau G. Cheney and Margo E. Cheney.
A memorial service was held at The Casino in Garden City on April 10. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist. Anita E. Rudolph, formerly of New Hyde Park and Garden City, died on March 28, 2005. She loved her family, flowers, her violets and cats. Wife of the late Dr. Robert E. Rudolph Sr. Mother of Lois Szostak and the late Robert Jr. Grandmother of Anita Lisette Szostak and Jennifer Szostak Harper. Great-grandmother of Calvin Robert Harper. The family was cared for by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, New Hyde Park. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anne' Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.
