The following demonstrations for senior citizen residents will take place at the senior recreation center on Golf Club Lane:
Monday, Feb. 28: "Line Dancing Made Easy." Line dancing expert Fran Gong will visit the recreation center to teach the newest steps.
Monday, March 14: "Origami - the Art of Oriental Paper Folding." No materials are required, just come and have fun.
Monday, March 21: Speaker James Reed, deputy commissioner for the Office of Consumer Affairs of Nassau County will speak about "Identity Theft: America's Fastest Growing Crime." Last year over 10 million people were victims. Learn why senior citizens are major targets and what you can do to protect yourself.
All Garden City seniors aged 60 and older are invited to attend these free programs. All programs will take place during senior recreation group meetings every Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Recreation Center on Golf Club Lane. For more information, call the recreation office at 465-4075.
The recreation department is pleased to announce the continuation of dedicated senior citizen tennis court time at the Community Park tennis facility. During certain times of the week, courts will be designated "senior citizens only." This court time can be booked at a discounted rate of $15 and is available to Garden City senior citizens aged 60 and older. The following requirements must be met in order to book the court:
* Senior court time may only be booked up to two days ahead.
* All players on the court must be 60 years or older.
* All dedicated court time must be used for play only, no private lessons will be allowed on these courts.
The following days and times will be available: Wednesdays between 7-8 a.m.; Wednesdays between 2-3 p.m.; and Fridays between 3:30-4:30 p.m. For further information or to reserve senior court time, call the Tennis Hut at 483-2525.
The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizens Affairs would like to make Garden City's senior citizen population aware of their Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). The program is designed to help coordinate and assist income-eligible households with their energy needs. HEAP is available to Nassau County seniors aged 60 years or older who own or rent. Help is based on income. Call the HEAP office at 227-7386 for an application that will determine eligibility.
The recreation department offers adult swim sessions at Adelphi University's indoor pool located at Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult, 18 years or older, who lives in Garden City. The pool is open for use Mondays through Thursdays in two sessions: 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the recreation department. Residents must register each day they would like to swim by calling the recreation office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time. For more information, call the recreation office.
The recreation department operates a senior information line that answers questions about activities offered by the department for Garden City residents. In addition, any seniors with questions about other services are referred to the Garden City Senior Project. Seniors may call 465-4190 Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
