Ryan Norell, a junior at Garden City High School, and Kevin Seiferth, a senior, have both been named to the Nassau County High School Hockey All-Star Squad, which will face off against Suffolk County in the ninth annual Vytra Cup Feb. 17 at the Nassau Coliseum.
Norell plays forward on the Garden City Wings while Seiferth plays defense on the Garden City Wings.
Sponsored by Vytra Health Plans, the New York Islanders and Newsday, the event begins with pre-game ceremonies, followed by the official competition. A mini-game between periods is also scheduled for junior varsity players. An awards ceremony follows immediately after the competition.
In addition, a special raffle will be held to benefit All Island Handicapped Sports, a nonprofit organization that runs programs for physically challenged children, some of whom compete in the Special Olympics.
The Vytra Cup has become a premiere scouting opportunity for area college programs, and this year's game takes on added significance as a talent showcase because two local colleges, Briarcliff College and SUNY Farmingdale, inaugurated hockey programs in the 2004-2005 season.
The Vytra Cup game will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and can be ordered by calling the High School Hockey League of Nassau County at 996-4533.
