The Garden City Recreation Department will be sponsoring a new "senior" group that will meet on Monday mornings at the Garden City Recreation Center on Golf Club Lane. The group is designed to give senior residents of the Village of Garden City a place to meet with old and new friends and discuss topics of interest. Possible events may include book discussions, trips and speakers. Anyone aged 60 or above is eligible to join. The first meeting of this group will take place Monday, Jan. 24, at 9:30 a.m. For further information, contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075. St. Paul's Field House will be open on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for high school students to enjoy playing basketball, volleyball and other gym activities. Students will be supervised but no organized activities will take place. This time is set up for students to enjoy activities with their friends. No organized practices are allowed. For further information, contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075. On Sunday afternoons beginning this Sunday, St. Paul's Field House will have designated "open gym time" for village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym will be available for use between 12-3:30 p.m. each Sunday until March. This time is designated for residents to use the Field House on a family and individual basis. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff in the Field House to monitor activities, this is not a drop off program. The recreation department asks that elementary school aged children and younger be accompanied by an adult. Please note that due to the amount of people using the Field House at this time, the recreation department cannot allow lacrosse sticks and baseball bats in the Field House during this time.

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children's swimming lessons for village residents at Adelphi University Swimming Pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be 6 years of age by the start of the program in order to participate. The classes begin Feb. 5 and are taught by Red Cross certified instructors. The cost is $40. The following levels will be offered:

Level 1 - children who have never taken lessons before

Level 2 - children who have taken a lesson but have not reached Level 3

Level 3 - children who have not passed the old "Red Cross" Level 4

Level 4 - children who have not passed the old "Red Cross" Level 5

Level 5 - children who have not passed the old "Red Cross" Level 6

Level 6P - Personal water safety - children who have passed the "Red Cross" Level 6 or 7 or were currently in Level 7

Level 6F - water fitness - children who have passed "Red Cross" Level 6 or 7 or were currently taking Level 7

Please make selections carefully; fees are not returnable. To register by mail only, no walk in registrations will be accepted until Feb. 1. The recreation department cannot be responsible for delays in the mail. To register, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall or at St. Paul's. Residents can also make their own by listing child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the code you are registering. Mail all information with payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Make all checks payable to the "Inc. Village of Garden City."

The Garden City Recreation Department is sponsoring a "rec night" for seventh and eighth graders this Friday, Jan. 21, at St. Paul's Field House. Recreation staff will chaperone the party, which will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $5. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games. Once children are in the Field House, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come down to the Field House to pick up your child. Call 465-4075 for more information.

The recreation department's tennis ladder match play program is a junior league intraclub program for children ages 9-18. This program offers competitive match play formatted to fit each child's playing level. The league is organized by age and playing ability. Interested children must be able to serve from the baseline, sustain a slow paced rally, keep score unassisted and have an understanding of the rules of tennis.

This program will be minimally supervised during match play. The recreation department's teaching staff will set up the matches. All matches will be held on Sundays between 2 and 4 p.m. beginning Sunday, Jan. 30. If residents choose to participate in this league, the cost of the 10-week program will be $60. There will be no make-ups for this league. To register, visit the recreation office in village hall. For information, call Sue at the tennis facility at 483-2525.

The recreation department is offering Garden City senior citizens their own tennis lesson time. Lessons are available in five-week blocks on Fridays from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Community Park tennis facility. The cost of each five-week session is $100. The January session began Friday, Jan. 14. This 10-week program will teach the beginners as well as the advanced student the art of painting portraits, landscapes and still life in pastels. Demonstrations will be available throughout the program as needed. Arleen Rueth Urban, class instructor, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America.

Classes will be held at St. Paul's Cluett Hall on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning Jan. 28. The cost to register for this program will be $125. The program is open to adult Garden City residents. Students will be given a list of supplies needed to purchase for this program at the first class. Please note the jazz class is open to older teens. The stretch classes are similar to yoga, using stretch techniques and simple dance movements with music to improve flexibility. All classes began Jan. 18. For further information or to register, visit the recreation office in village hall.

The recreation department's chess club began again Dec. 4. The club meets each Saturday afternoon in the Garden City Library from noon to 2 p.m. Under the direction of Paul Dooher, youngsters have a chance to learn new strategies while playing games each week. Beginners are taught basic moves and concepts. At the end of the season, the recreation department will hold a tournament, and award trophies for the top performers. There is no charge for this program and no registration is necessary. Youngsters in grades three and up are welcome to join. For further information, contact the recreation office in village hall.

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce, once again, that it will run a learn-and-play hockey clinic. The program will be open for boys and girls ages 6-8 and 9-12 on four Friday evenings in January. This program is designed to help gain hockey experience through fun pick-up games and clinics. The times for these clinics will be as follows:

Ages 6-8 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Ages 9-12 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The price per child is $25. All games will be played at the Garden City Community Park roller hockey rinks. For further information or to register, visit the recreation office in village hall.

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce its spring roller hockey league for boys and girls ages 6-8 and 9-12. League play will begin Friday, March 4. Evaluation days will be held in order to make even teams. Your child needs to attend one of the following evaluation dates: Friday, Feb. 4, 11 or 18 at the following times:

Ages 6-8 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Ages 9-12 7 to 8:30 p.m.

All games will be played at Garden City Community Park roller hockey rinks. Ages 6-8 will have their games on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. Ages 9-12 will have their games on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. The price per player is $50. Applications are now available at village hall on Stewart Avenue and in the tennis center at Community Park. Please fill out an application and return it to village hall by Feb. 2.

Applications are now being accepted for summer park and camp positions in the Garden City Recreation Department. If you will be a high school senior or older this summer, have enjoyed the park programs as a child and are looking to share that experience with other children, visit the recreation office in village hall for an application. An interview will also be necessary, which will be set up as the applications are returned.
