Omar Syed Afzal, 18, of Mineola, pled guilty to two counts of second-degree vehicular manslaughter, a Class D felony, and one count of driving while impaired by drugs, a Class A misdemeanor. Afzal was arrested July 29 for causing the deaths of Christina Caroleo and Alison Reilly, both of Garden City, in a tragic car accident days before Christmas last year.
According to Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon, on December 23, 2003 Afzal was under the influence of drugs while operating a 1998 Ford Explorer northbound on Nassau Boulevard. He lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree in the vicinity of Merillon Avenue before rolling over and ejecting two rear passengers. One of the passengers, Alison Reilly, 15, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other, Christina Caroleo, a 16-year-old female, was taken to Winthrop Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries January 26, 2004.
Afzal faces up to seven years in prison. Nassau County Court Judge Jeffrey S. Brown will sentence him Feb. 23, 2005.
