The Garden City Police Department reports the arrest of a West Hempstead woman for four counts of felony assault, including assaulting a police officer with her vehicle.

On Monday, Dec. 6, at approximately 9 a.m., Police Officer Michael Buonaiuto of the Garden City Police Department was on routine patrol when he observed a vehicle commit a traffic offense. The car was stopped on Stewart Avenue and Lee Road. A check of the driver, Stacey Kaloudis, 27, of West Hempstead, was driving with a suspended license. The car she was driving was also unregistered, uninspected, uninsured and had switched license plates and a switched registration sticker.

When Officer Buonaiuto went back to the car to advise the driver that he would be issuing several tickets and impounding her car, police report that Kaloudis accelerated and drove her vehicle into the officer, knocking him to the ground. She then fled the scene. Officer Buonaiuto was able to get back to his patrol car and follow the vehicle. He observed it turn onto Tullamore Road, going north toward Garden City Park at a high rate of speed.

Officer Buonaiuto then observed the vehicle go through a Stop sign at Stratford Avenue and strike a female jogger, sending her over the top of the car. The vehicle then struck a car at the intersection, injuring the occupants. The driver then fled her car and ran away on foot. Officer Buonaiuto arrived at the scene and immediately rendered aid to the injured jogger and the occupants of the car. The driver was chased down and apprehended by local residents and brought back to the accident scene. Officer Buonaiuto then placed the subject under arrest.

Officer Buonaiuto suffered neck, back, hip and leg injuries. The jogger suffered head and neck injuries. The passenger of the struck car suffered a fractured sternum and the driver of the struck car suffered head and chest injuries. All of the injured parties were taken to Winthrop where they were admitted and further treated.

Kaloudis was charged with four counts of felony assault, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury and seven additional traffic violations. She was detained pending an appearance in First District Court in Hempstead.

On Dec. 7, the defendant appeared in First District Court and was held on $50,000 bail, pending her next court appearance. Two of the injured parties remain hospitalized as of press time.
