Nanny Attempts to Smother 10-Month-Old in Garden City
The Hayes family was horrified when they discovered, through a surveillance "nanny cam" they recently installed in their Garden City home, Bella Zalamea of Bay Shore repeatedly slapping and even attempting to smother their 10-month-old daughter with a stuffed toy.

Eckna Foundation Gifts Football Scoreboard to Village
The Village of Garden City officially unveiled and dedicated a new football scoreboard at Stewart Field Oct. 17 to remember Garden City resident Paul Eckna. Garden City Mayor Barbara Miller, on behalf of the village board of trustees and the community, thanked the Eckna Foundation for the gift she said Garden City youth would enjoy for years to come.

Jump Start Foundation, in cooperation with the Garden City Athletic Club, will be hosting their second annual 3 on 3 Thanksgiving basketball tournament Saturday, Nov. 27. The event will take place at Island Garden Basketball in West Hempstead, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Mercy Medical Center.

Waldorf School Wins Cross Country Championship
On Monday, Nov. 1, the Waldorf School's varsity cross-country team concluded their season in fine fashion, winning the IPPSAL championship held at Sunken Meadow Park. The top three conference teams to advance to the championship meet were the Waldorf School, Martin Luther High School and the Portledge School. At the end of the meet, the Waldorf and Portledge teams tied for first place, 32-32. Jesse Kane's sixth place finish proved to be the tiebreaker, earning Waldorf the championship.
