The Nassau County Office of Senior Citizens Affairs has canceled their flu immunization program. Therefore, the Garden City Recreation Department will not be providing flu shots Nov. 16. The Nassau County Office has suggested that all seniors keep checking with their private physicians for further availability.

You are invited to join a senior discussion group. Come, renew old acquaintances and meet new friends while talking about topics that interest you. The Garden City Senior project, in partnership with the Garden City Recreation Department, will sponsor this group, which will meet on Monday mornings at the Garden City Senior Center.

The discussion group will meet for five Mondays beginning Nov. 29 (no meeting on Dec. 27), from 10-11:30 a.m. There is no charge for this program, but pre-registration is necessary. To join this discussion, please call the recreation department at 465-4075.

The recreation department's adult swim sessions at Adelphi began Monday, Oct. 25, at Adelphi's indoor pool, located at Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult, 18 years or older, who resides in Garden City. The pool is open for use Mondays through Thursdays in two sessions: 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the recreation department. Residents must register each day they would like to swim by calling the recreation office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time. For further information, call the recreation office.

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting children's swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University swimming pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be 6 years old by the start of the program in order to participate. The classes begin this Saturday, Nov. 6, and are taught by Red Cross certified instructors. The cost is $40. To register, mail form and a check to the recreation department at 351 Stewart Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530. Walk-in registrations are now being accepted.

Level 1/2 for children who have never taken swim lessons

Level 2 for children who have taken lessons but did not pass the old "Red Cross" Level 3

Level 3 for children who have not passed the old "Red Cross" Level 4

Level 4 for children who have not passed the old "Red Cross" Level 5

To register, pick up an application at the recreation office in village hall or at St. Paul's. Residents can also make their own by listing child's name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the camp you are registering. Mail all information with payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Avenue. Make all checks payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City.

It is not too early to register for the second session of children's tennis lessons, which will begin Monday, Jan. 3. The recreation department offers a full complement of lessons for children ages 5-18. In order to find out about the variety of lessons available and to get the best chance of a class that would fit your child's schedule, visit the recreation office in village hall. There are still limited openings available in the recreation department's Monday and Wednesday preschool arts and crafts classes at Cluett Hall. Contact the recreation office in village hall for further information or to register. The fall season of aerobic classes has begun at Cluett Hall. Instructors provide a top-notch workout in an enjoyable atmosphere. Certified instructors tailor their classes to the ability levels of the participants. The schedule of classes is as follows:
Monday 9 a.m.
Wednesday 8:30 a.m.
Thursday 8:30 a.m.
Thursday (step) 7:15 p.m.
Sunday 6:45 p.m.
The easy way to participate in classes is to purchase a "20-class pass". By purchasing this pass, residents can attend any class that fits their schedule. Simply present the pass to the attendant on duty as you enter the class, have it punched and enjoy your workout. The cost of the pass is $60. A pass can be purchased at Cluett Hall. For those who would like to try a class first, daily admission to any class is $4. For further information, call Cluett Hall during morning hours at 742-4905. The recreation department's adult programs in the field house began Tuesday, Oct. 12 according to the following schedule:

These programs, unless otherwise noted, are open to residents of Garden City who have graduated from high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly "pick up." A picture ID is required to sign into any program. For further information, call the recreation department at 465-4076. The recreation department still has limited tickets available for the Thursday, Nov. 18, show of Disney on Ice "Finding Nemo" at Nassau Coliseum. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to this performance are $20 each and can be purchased at the recreation office in village hall. Any unsold tickets will be returned to the coliseum Nov. 5.

The recreation department is pleased to announce the start of dedicated senior citizen tennis court time at the community park tennis facility. During certain times of the week, courts are designated "senior citizens only." This court time can be booked at a discounted rate of $15 and is available to Garden City senior citizens aged 60 or older.

The following requirements must be met in order to book the court: senior court time may only be booked up to two days ahead; all players on the court must be 60 years or older; and all dedicated court time must be used for play only. No private lessons allowed on these courts.

The following days and times are available as of Oct. 6:

Wednesdays 7-8 a.m.

Wednesdays 2-3 p.m.

Fridays 3:30-4:30 p.m.

The Community Park Tennis Center will be hosting mixed doubles tennis parties on the following dates: this Saturday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 4 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The fee for each evening of tennis is $30 per couple and includes court time, balls, food and refreshments. To sign up for these tennis nights call the Community Tennis Center at 483-2525. The women's tennis league has openings on the following days: Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., doubles 3.0 level, and on Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon, learn and play level. To sign up for more information, call Anne Marie Kenny at 483-2525. There are still openings left in the women's Wednesday night league. Three levels of play are offered: beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate. Lessons are included. For more information, call Steve Espey at 483-2525. Play began Oct. 13. Beginner lessons began Oct. 14 on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. The cost of this program is $50 per person and includes five lessons, paddles and balls. Those interested should call Steve Espey at 483-2525.

The recreation department's match play program is a junior league intraclub program for children aged 9-18. This program offers match play formatted to fit each child's playing level.

The league is organized by age and playing ability. Interested children must be able to serve from the baseline, sustain a slow paced rally, keep score unassisted and have an understanding of the rules of tennis.

This program will be minimally supervised during match play. The recreation department's teaching staff will set up the matches. All matches will be held either on Sunday between 2 and 3 p.m. or 3 and 4 p.m. or Saturday between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. depending on the player's skill level.

If residents choose to participate in this league, the cost of the 10-week program will be $160. There will be no make-ups for this league.

To register, residents must fill out a form and return it the recreation department, located at 351 Stewart Avenue, with a check made payable to the Incorporated Village of Garden City. For more information, call Sue at the tennis facility at 483-2525.
