Kerry Kent Smith Named Finalist in Miss Subways Contest
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), along with the New York Post, is re-creating the old Miss Subways contest, once a fixture of the NY Transit Authority (NYTA) from the 1940s to early 1970s. Posters of the Miss Subways ran for four months on each subway train.

Enthusiasts Celebrate Vanderbilt Cup's Centennial
County Executive Tom Suozzi joined automobile enthusiasts at The Garden City Hotel Sept. 30 to reminisce about The Vanderbilt Cup, America's first car race, and celebrate its 100th anniversary. The Cup used over 30 miles of Nassau County road and attracted a quarter-million spectators from around the world back in 1904.

Knickerbocker Yacht Club Raises $90,000 For Gift of Life Program
The Knickerbocker Yacht Club hosted the second "Sail for Life" Regatta in August with funds raised going to Gift of Life, a Rotary-based program whose mission is to further the cause of world peace and understanding by facilitating free medical services to needy children from around the world who suffer from congenital heart defects.

Recreation Department News
The recreation department held registration for its popular Preschool Arts and Crafts classes Tuesday, Oct. 5. This program begins the week of Thursday, Oct. 14 and is open to children ages 3.5 through 5 years old and who reside in Garden City. This eight-week program is offered according to the following schedule:
